One of my favourite modern ironies is that it's shows like Pop Idol that have become avatars for 'real people' 'singing live'. Not that they're not, but to have everything else surrounding it being largely artificial (something I don't object to - makes good TV) then stopping at the last hurdle is ludicrous.
