Speaking of mondo.. and animal deaths!... SOmeone talked to me about John Water's "Mondo Trasho" the other day. This was made 41 years ago and there are chickens heads being cut off. He was saying how pissed off it made him. I said "Come on man, 41 years ago -- don't you think those chickens would be dead by now anyway?"
I was just kidding, but it made ME think... people change a lot over the course of 41 years. I highly doubt the John Waters of today would kill a chicken for a movie. Of course, all those years ago, it was for shock value... (like having an actress eat dog shit) That doesn't excuse it, but look how many animals die senselessly daily for reasons other than "art". I'm sure all these filmmakers felt justified with whatever they were doing. It was a different time then than today...
Regardless, it's still offensive and brutal to watch to a lot of people, in any era. For whatever reason, there was a lot of animal deaths in all those Italian cannibal films. See also: Cannibal Ferox, Jungle Holocaust, and Slave of the Cannibal God. I'm sure this was a bit more acceptable in the 70's and in Italy than we find it present-day in (wherever you're from). They're products of their time, definitely. And if you want to see these movies without the animal deaths, those versions usually exist too. My girlfriend watched Cannibal Holocaust with me the one time I watched it and she went "ewwwww' at the turtle being cut open. I'm sure this was some "moral point" trying to be made by the filmmaker... "you will gladly watch a girl getting raped and a pole shoved inside of her -- why do you now look away
at REAL animal deaths?" Either way... it sucks.
