Idk, I may eventually get to reading A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man or Dubliners, or even Ulysses, but fuck something as pretentious as Finnegans Wake. Though wherever the Secret Girl lyric is from, I do enjoy that line, at the least.

Your judging the best writer of the 20th-century on the basis of a book you haven't read because it's (your quotes) "avant-garde"(a movement, so far as I know, Joyce wasn't involved in). I mean, I really don't care to tell people that over-earnest bollocks of 'man, you need to read [x]', but you may as well say that Ovid is pretentious for writing in a language that no-one speaks any more.
