In middle school/early high school I was a regular poster on some message boards that now kinda embarass me to think about (well, one in particular...AOHell Goth Boards....jeeez.) It was dorky but also introduced me to a lot of music and ideas that I would have otherwise never known about. None of my friends growing up had similiar interests and message boards allowed me to explore my "alternative" taste.

I was trying to avoid message boards throughout college because they took up so much of my time. I recently joined this forum and I love it. It's great to be able to have conversations with people who are on the same page. Most of my friends in the real world are sick of listening to me reference Sonic Youth and other music related things.
