This is the bullshit politics game though; if he had said the right thing ala "we have to respect a foreign jurisdictions legal process and stay out of it - so I'm not going to comment", the conservative talk show hosts would have gone to town on him.
That is not a justification for what he's doing, it's bullshit, but it's the sphere they all exist in
