Many cases of sciatica are treated with different modalities. Evidence of effectiveness for these measures are however limited.[8] Some of these measures include:
Anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. NSAIDs or oral steroids though NSAIDs are no more effective than a placebo for acute sciatica. [9]
Acetaminophen: limited evidence
Narcotics: often used if severe pain
Physical therapy / Stretching exercises: no evidence of improving pain or function
Epidural steroid injects: no long term improvements in outcomes but some short term benefits
Non-surgical spinal decompression
Massage Therapy: little support
Chiropractic: no benefit has been found over concerative treatment

My gf has pretty severe sciatica and can't afford to go to a doctor. It's pretty fucking terrible. She was a competitive martial artist for 12 years (second degree black belt, former world rankings in her division) and if anybody knows about stretching/non-western medicine it's her. She could fucking teach a course on that stuff. She saw a physical therapist a couple of times while she was still on a college insurance plan and it was totally ineffective. Stretching just has not cut it. Since she can't afford painkillers, she pretty much can't do any physical activity which is extremely depressing for her, being as only a few years ago she more fit than any of us.
