This is the whole drama that happened to Michaelangelo with his David, which was originally a public statue, but was in his life-time brought into a private gallery for the elite, which greatly troubled the artist. Why do you think the High Renaissance paintings were mostly hung in Churchs and other public places? To share the art with the people.
