When I say I am an atheist, I very specifically mean that I do not see any evidence at all to believe that there is any sort of 'God', and that there seem to be more plausible scientific explanations for our existence. That said, I do not mean to say that I have can state with any certainty that there 'is no God', merely that I can't see any reason for saying that there is.
If I were to say that I was an agnostic, I would take that to mean that I did believe there was a God of some kind, as in a creator figure, but that I did not specifically feel that I could subscribe to any organised religion, or even make any specific assertions about this creator. 'I feel that there's probably something there, but I don't know what exactly'.
