I think the point was for the effects to make fun of themselves, remember this was the crashing of the late 80s/early 90s special effects wave peaking with blockbusters like T2. It was satire against big Hollywood shit, and that is the art in itself. To make fun of itself in such creative ways that you don't even get it and just see campy cheese and catch phrases, its like an inside joke
