Yesterday I watched a documentation on TV, which addressed the issue of absent sex education in school in some parts of the US. I'm not sure, how many states in fact face this situation, but apparently it's something of an issue, cause some people interviewed claimed, that the lack of sex education (and the accompanied condemnation of the use of condoms) would lead to numerous unintentional pregnancies. For example a girl said, she would find out twice a week average about a girl, who recently got pregnant.
On the other hand some people stated, that sex education would be useless anyway, and teenagers would get sexually elucidated (?) elsewhere. What do you think? I personally have been sexually elucidated (?) by my sister and mother. Though, I'm sure sex education in school was uesful for me too. |

I personally think most of your sex education is garnered from 'outside sources.' I can't recall learning anything in sex ed I didn't already know.
And perhaps things are different now, but when I had sex ed, the teachers were so awkward about discussing it that they made it as clinical as possible, and didn't really address any of the issues that are relevant to 'safe sex' anyhow. And I don't care if you're 11 or 21, if you don't know how to practice safe sex, then you're a fucking idiot. It's common sense, and there's no excuse for not using it. Any chick who is getting knocked up like that and then blaming it on lack of education is trying to pass the buck for her (their) irresponsibility. I'm not saying I think sex education in school is useless - the more information available to these kids, the better - but it's certainly not the only source of knowledge. This is simply another manifestation of the U.S.'s adored hobby of absolving the individual of personal responsibility. |

i dont get why there are so many people convinced that children should not know anything about sex. my children will know everything about sex before they know how to write. whats the point of hiding? i remember being faced with the truth at the age of 6, it was too late, cuz it was so weird to me and repulsive. i think if parents talked seriously about sex with children from their birth, and not hiding that they are doing things in bed besides sleeping, it would be the most healthy way to go... fuck christian ideology... and fuck religion... its bullshit, and they fucked up everything and they still do.

Knowledge is power. Besides I can speak for myself that back in when I recieved my board certified sex education, it taught about STD's. Perhaps the most important thing a young man can and should learn. They taught us what each STD is and what signs to look for if you have it. Its not just about telling a kid what goes where you know. Just because someone has the knowledge of sex, doesn't mean they're going to become some raging nympho. If they are one many have had sex by junior high anyways.

Lack of sex education has it's problems, but the unwanted pregnancies are very related to the condemnation of condoms that you mention. The same thing happens in parts of the third world where aid etc is delivered by religious groups - some of them convince the people not to use contraception. It has a similar effect.

everyone seems to think that someone else will do it it seems. this whole issue probably goes into peoples embarrasment of talking about sex. i think we need to discuss it more openly in society and schools. i personally was given sex education at school but it was still kept quite quiet etc.
it needs to be done from an early age as well as there are plenty of cases of 11 and 12 year olds getting pregnant and std's etc. i lived in a place that shall remain nameless but had the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in britain and it was sad to see them trooping down the street to the local shopping centre. people need to admit that people will have sex and not talking about condoms or sex education, even for those that some people think should not have them is for outdated fools. which would people prefer: the spread of aids and other std's, unwanted pregancy or educated more responsible people with the means to protect themselves? |

some people think that just because you talk about sex and hand out condoms it in someway makes people have sex. i suppose its the same with pornography in that people think that porn makes people have sex or at least think about it, or is it that sex and sexual thought exists therefore so does porn?
