This kind of bugginess does seem to go with the territory with Audacity. I would try loading a newer version as you suggest, as they do seem to notice their bugs and fix them over time without ever drawing attention to them. That's the sort of stuff that made me just switch to Garage Band since it was on my Mac anyway.
