I'm going to be in London for about a month this summer, and I'm looking for a place to stay. I know its a big city and that crime can happen anywhere, but are there any particular parts of the city I should avoid?
Also, know of any good hostels? |

as for hostels, try the camden inn.
it couldn't be more central, it is clean and comfy and is only around £12 a night.

Most of central london is OK.
Avoid boroughs like Newham (no reason to go there anyway), areas like Harlesdon, certain parts of Hackney. Most parts of London have their slightly scummy areas, but keep away from visibly run-down residential areas and you should be fine. Good social spots you might want to check out are Shoreditch, Notting Hill, Camden and Soho. |

Check out Covent Garden - it's where one of the Rough Trade shops is. The big HMV on Oxford Street has a pretty good range of stuff too, if interested.

Dammit, leave Elton out of it!
The obvious? I'm old and have dodgy teeth. Now how's about a cuddle, young man?

Everyone should avoid Hoxton too, unless you like your lifestyle totally Mexico.

I don't know where you're visiting from but one thing you should bear in mind is how expensive London is. Food and drink can really eat up your budget if you aren't careful. Chains like Stockpot in the West End are good for a decent and cheap no-frills meal.
