Brew + Room 237 Presents:
Monday 3rd October - Brudenell Social Club - Leeds
RUINS ALONE
Ruins were a Japanese experimental rock duo of drum set and electric bass guitar. The group, formed in 1985, was supposedly intended to be a power trio; the guitarist, however, never showed up to the band's first rehearsal, so the group remained a duo. The drummer is Tatsuya Yoshida and the group has featured four different bass players over its history.
Ruins then became Ruins Alone. Like syrup or strong alcohol, Ruins make music that makes you grimace. Ruins is a lab of the Tatsuya Yoshida stamp, a direct interface between his brain and his drumsticks. You could get 15 rock records out of one Ruins album, just by adding a bit of fizzy water. Each composition could be developed in many different directions. Tatsuya Yoshida plays in numerous groups; he needs to, to sustain sufficient space for his overflowing creativity.
Tatsuya Yoshida has worked with some of the greatest improvisers on the planet, such as John Zorn, Fred Frith or Derek Bailey. Today, above and beyond the Ruins Alone project, Tatsuya Yoshida is the composer and drummer both in Korekyojinn, an instrumental trio that pushes polyrhythmic complexity to its ultimate limits, and the Koenji Hyakkei ensemble, a quasi-orchestral formation that bridges the gap between prog rock and contemporary music. In his time out from music, Monsieur Yoshida compulsively photographs stones. He travels the world in search of the mineral beauty of monumental statues and the millennial energy of rocks.
He was chosen by Matt Groening to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival Groening curated in May 2010 in Minehead, England.

NOPE
Nope are inspired by psychedelic repetitive and primitive sludge the like of which will be dredged from the River Air following the collapse of the industrial world in 2068. Their music attempts to convey the rhythms and pace of life experienced on the cusp of the birth of the machine age. They are equal parts Spinning Jenny, nano technology and undiscovered bio-fuel. Featuring members of That Fucking Tank and Mucky Sailor.

Liz Harris (Grouper) is flying over for three special appearances in October. Grouper is the solo project for electro-acoustic ambient/post rock musician Liz Harris, of Portland, Oregon. She has just released her latest album which received critical unanimous critical acclaim from International press. She was the tour support for Animal Collective's high profile U.S tour and has supported The Flaming Lips, Godspeed, Xiu Xiu and played a great deal of International festivals.
"This spooky night-time anthem shows that Grouper's restless artistic spirit shows no sign of diminishing just yet. (The Guardian)
"Whether she's working in realm of rough-hewn folk or amniotic drift, this is music that takes you places." (Pitchfork)

In the spring of 2009, Grouper was the supporting act for the high-profile Animal Collective tour in support of the latter's successful 2009 album, Merriweather Post Pavilion. NBC Washington's "Concert Picks" column said of Grouper, "The ambient one-woman post-rock band Grouper also makes this show a must-see (if you have tickets or connections or luck – otherwise, sorry, it’s sold out, sold out a long time ago). Liz Harris’ spooky, ethereal and surreal sounds are based on her acoustic, often avant garde guitar plucking and her quiet, hazy vocals. The minor key melodies are pretty despite a suspenseful nightmare quality."
Grouper was chosen by Animal Collective to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that they curated in May 2011.

BARDO POND (Matador/ATP/Fire)
American psychedelic rock band formed in 1991, and who are currently signed to London based label Fire Records. The current members are Michael Gibbons (guitar), John Gibbons (guitar), Isobel Sollenberger (flute and vocals), Clint Takeda (bass guitar), Jason Kourkonis (drums), and Aaron Igler (synth/electronics). Bardo Pond's drug-inspired music is often classified as space rock, acid rock, post-rock, shoegazing, noise or psychedelic rock. Many Bardo Pond album titles have been derived from the names of esoteric psychedelic substances. Their sound has been likened to Pink Floyd, Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine amongst others.
Allmusic describes Bardo Pond as having "lengthy, deliberate sound explorations filled with all the hallmarks of modern-day space rock: droning guitars, thick distortion, feedback, reverb, and washes of white noise." Bardo Pond are a taper-friendly band who encourage fans to make recordings of their shows.

HOOKWORMS
A relatively new five piece psychedelic rock group in the vein of Spacemen 3. Dense Wooden Shjips-esque grooves play repetitious host to echo drenched spiritual wailing and astral synth drone. Featuring members of Twisted and Spectrals.

THE PISS SUPERSTITION
The monicker under which former Vibracathedral Orchestra member Julian Bradley conducts his guitar drone explorations. Expect murky compositions with unexpectedly melodic seams and disintegrated doom-riffs running through the layers of effects fuzz and feedback. New LP out on Memoirs of an Aesthete.

TRUMPETS OF DEATH
Broody avant rock...
"Trumpets of Death have delivered a record which is uncompromising in its vision and, most wonderfully, complete in its execution. It is a record which richly rewards repeat listens. Teeth + Teeth = Teeths is something music in 2011 desperately needs: a shot of the dark stuff, delivered by people who know exactly what they're doing" Soundblab.com

If I wasn't at the opposite end of the country I'd be at that Bardo Pond show like a shot just to see Hookworms. I picked up their tape from Norman, and it's bloody brilliant.

Just checked out Nope!'s site too, and they seem pretty fine.
