my partner has really really really different taste in music to me. He works in stage production an so 90% of what he listens to are musical scores.
Sometimes it drives me mad when I get in the car when he picks me up from somewhere and he has like Tarzan playing super loud or The lion king or sthg. All the hardcore points I've earned standing there looking awesome are instantly blown away. Other times its really nice to have someone who does listen to something really different, because it gets me to listen to a lot of stuff I wouldn't have otherwise, and really completely enjoy some of it. He digs some of my music but mostly doesn't understand it. 'It's just noise. where is the orchestral backing? ' etc etc. when I put on Diana ah naid or Catatonia he calls it my lesbian music.. along with a lot of other girl stuff I listen to. And today I'm trying my hardest to try and get him to come to sonic youth tonight with me so I dont have to ask another one of my friends, who music wise are all guys, and then he'd get jealous anyway.

This part is the worst and is the thing that really makes it hard sometimes. I go along to shows of his but hes not really as good as coming to gigs with me. Cos of the standing. : / Im not sure he fully understands listening to people sing bad musicals is just as torturous to me.

No, unless he was a professional athlete with a perfect bubble butt or something.....I might let that one slide.

I could, once they didn't start giving out about my taste. Live and let live. So I guess this is pretty much like how I'd deal with someone who was religious. Believe/like whatever the hell you want, if you get something from it, awesome. But if you start preaching about how you're right and I'm wrong or something, then goodbye.

I mean, there is def. a real difference in someone having BAD taste overall and someone having different tastes that you have. For me, there has to be some kind of musical symmetry between us....that is part of the turn on.

If they were open-minded, absolutely.
If not, that initial attraction might be difficult, but it wouldn't be absolutely impossible either. |

I'm going through a strange phase in an 'is-it-on/is-it-off?' relationship at the moment. It seems neither of us can quite work out whether our shared tastes and interests really warrants us taking that next step. If anything, we're far too similar in terms of taste and general outlook on life. I dunno, life's never straight-forward.

i think the bigger issue is being motivated to get to know, or even be interested in talking to someone with different taste in music.
