With Thurston Moore The Tom Robinson Show Tom talks to the former Sonic Youth frontman, songwriter and guitarist about his career to date, focusing on the art of the guitar and his pioneering approach to the instrument. His path into the post punkworld was opened up by bands such as PIL, Wire and The Raincoats, and indeed he's stated that at that time he wanted to come to London to hang out with Public Image. He formed with Kim Gordon in 1981, and recruited fellow guitar experimentalist Lee Ranaldo shortly after. They became known for their unusual guitar tunings and the use of heavily modified sounds. Sonic Youth rapidly established themselves as key players in the no-wave scene with their distinct brand of noise rock. Whilst they achieved limited commercial success they garnered much critical acclaim, and are a highly influential band. Tom uses his experimental approach to the guitar as the narrative through the interview, moving from those early post punk influences, through the music of Sonic Youth and his side projects, to his most recent solo album The Best Day.… |
