COLLECTIONS OF COLONIES OF BEES Collections of Colonies of Bees sweep in grandly, in billowing swarms of sound, bourn aloft on a thousand wings of minuscule, elegant detail. Guitars chime and soar; deft yet intensely focused percussion propels towards an inevitable dawn; covering it all is a gossamer veil of subtly nuanced electronica. Their CD Birds is joyous, epic minimalism in exquisite registration, a sound that is dazzling – and as sweet as honey taken straight from the comb. MEGAFAUN Megafaun use unkempt lyrical maneuvers alongside traditional Americana folk instrumentation to produce harmonically overlapping layers that at once enrapture and confound the listeners. Unnerving percussive motifs dot the sprawling landscape, sounding the call to arms. In mellower moments, one can be tricked into feeling emancipated of this duty, only to discover the trains keep running, the babies keep being born, warskeep being fought, and sympathy is the only answer in a convoluted dream of serenity. JON MUELLER An internationally recognized percussionist, composer and free-improvisor; he is a founder of the band Collections of Colonies of Bees; and he has performed with an array of artists, including Rhys Chatham, and members of Swans, Wilco, and more. For the past several years, Mueller has worked with rhythms that come from gong frequencies, from vibrations of the bodies of bass drums, and the surprising sonorities that occur with the combination of these elements. Now he applies these techniques to his latest solo effort on Table of the Elements: "Metals" is, as its name suggests, a bold, all-percussion foray into heavy metal. No theatrical silliness here; just sheer exhilaration; the fundamental power of loud, organized, precise rhythms; ringing, heavy anti-melodies. It's this sound, in the many forms it has taken over the years, that continually inspires new philosophies, drives independent thinking, and causes hundreds of thousands of people to bang their heads. Jon Mueller takes it, shapes it and makes it his own. MELISSA ST. PIERRE Peppering the strings, hammers, and dampers of the piano with a variety of objects, protean composer, performer and aural provocateur Melissa St. Pierre, aka, slaughtermouse, transforms the instrument's typical timbre and gives it a chance, an opportunity to reveal its true nature. Add a EHX 2880 and it becomes a looped, layered, locked extravaganza. In her adroit, gifted hands, the piano becomes not just a percussion instrument, but 88 percussion instruments, each key a portal to a new world of sound. Sparkling gamelans chatter; harrowing voodoo drums call out in the night. I'm sure that TOTE must be due to come to London sometime soon... please?
A visit from that NY line-up would be nice. |

There were supposed to be TOTE in the UK and Europe this year, as mentioned here: http://www.myspace.com/tableoftheelementsfestival4 But it doesn't look like it's going to happen. Maybe in 2008. |
