You don't understand the Loveless love, eh? Basically, it's the DEFINITION of shoegaze. That's why it's so highly regarded. I personally think it's not the best thing they ever did (in fact, I'd rank it near the bottom of MBV's recorded output -- the drums are too tinny and some of the vocal samples are annoying). However, Isn't Anything, in my eyes, is fucking PERFECT. I don't want to get into an argument or anything. I'm just saying.. Loveless "invented" shoegaze; maybe not INVENTED but... it's the record every other shoegaze acts rips off.
And for the record, it's the best fucking album cover ever.. |

I was serious when I said George Harrison started it. Check out any of his Indian influenced stuff, even the poppier songs with an Indian influence. And in songs where he deliberately slows things up, like Blue Jay Way.

I only really, really love MBV. I know a lot of people love Slowdive, but I don't really get why they're so, so great. Boo Radleys - I've got one of their albums and I just found them really fucking annoying, though I can't say i've listened to it for a good while and maybe my tastes have refined since.... Haven't really checked out many of the others though Curve sound really cool I've been meaning to get something of theirs.. And also does anyone know if the Lilys are any good? I've heard a few things and they sound kind of like shoegaze crossbred (sorry) with the breeders or throwing muses or something like that.

lilys are ok. not major...
try the pale saints, heavenly, velocity girl (only the first album) as for boo radleys, im talking everythings alright forever and giant steps... NOT WAKE UP FUCKING BOO! curve are good, the album cuckoo isok, doppelganger is pretty good but their album of early e.p.s is excellent, pubic fruit. anything else is twiddle twaddle oxfam bargain bin 50p territory... like most shoegaze! |

It's C'mon Kid's that I've got... i cant bring myself around to putting it on because in a single moment in time I dont think I've hated an album more than that one.

bump.
Also, "I don't understand all the loveless love"; I agree with this. It is the quintessential shoegaze album and the most influential, but it's not near as good as Isn't Anything or You Made Me Realize EP... Loveless has about 4 or 5 songs that do absolutely nothing for me. |

I just came across Kitchens of Distinction on MTV2. Great stuff. Must check out an album. Also, I have heard a Bailter Space track on some compilation, it was fairly excellent.. ditto Flying Saucer Attack.. I reckon I could be quite into some shoegaze stuff, must make sure to get some of these records.. |

loveless would sound stupid if the drums weren't "tinny"
thee heavenly music association mbv slowdive curve (not shoegaze specifically but leaned towards it) lilys loop (also leaned toward it but don't fit in the genre)

lush's early stuff is good. have loads of curve recs, promos and remixs and shit. the song horrorhead is GREAT. the rest is hit or miss.
the telescopes were great back in the day. catherine wheel - overrated. but the BEST shoegaze band of all is the swirlies. mbv shouldnt be lumped in with shoegaze at all anymore - they've got more affinity with noise. |

I feel slightly ashamed being a MBV fan knowing that there are this many morons who care about an effects pedal
Im going to the Roundhouse on Monday and im gonna stand at the back away from said idiots and im going to enjoy the sound. If you want to do air guitar, Saxxon are probably doing a tour

I dunno. I went through my MBV kick, and I still like a few choice songs--the first half of Isn't Anything is decent. But for the most part I can't stand them anymore. And I'm not trying to start shit; I completely respect that people love them. I just think, in retrospect, they're frickin annoying. I don't like his lyrics, I don't like his voice. Their infamous signature sound is, in effect, slightly tonal white noise. Same with Psychocandy. Even the Reids didn't take that CD seriously.

Also, atsonicpark mentioned Astrobrite and lovesliescrushing, these are excellent as well, although the newer lovesliescrushing is more electronic sounding, but Astrobrite is gaze to the soul.
