Yeah, I tend to think Lou Reed's dismissal was quite disingenuous. I can appreciate the velvets not being into Sgt Peppers (which I think is really what he was referring to) but find it unlikely that they weren't at least slightly inspired by their earlier albums. Not necessarily in terms of the music they made but, as Cale says in that quote, making them think a lot more about what they were doing.

I think that's true to a degree, or at least it used to be. you have a situation now though where a person who drives a black cab often earns far more than a person in middle management. In that sense class distinctions seem far more cultural than financial.
