i thought of this the other day:
in 1986, sy recorded evol, evol contains expressway to yr skull which was their long song, a launching path for improvisation and a live favorite. it's one of their first "masterpiece" songs. ok, you all know how that song is. fast forward to 1995, sy released washing machine, again a long song and a fan favorite. again, no need to further with this song right? now, it's 2006, 20 years after the band released evol and 11 after releasing washing machine. the band will issue rather ripped and it seems that every ten years (give or take 1) they release an album with an epic long song which combine their songwriting skills with an extended section for noise and improvisation. my theory is that rather ripped will contain a follow up to expressway and the diamond sea. what do you think about this? |

think about it:
1986-evol 1995-washing machine (it's not like they did an album in '95 and one '96) 2006-rather ripped if the diamond sea was on a thousand leaves or goo, then it would certainly be stupid, but i see a pathern here. |

yes, rain on tin is long alright, but it doesn't have an extended noise improvisation section, it has an extended musical section with little chances for improvisation. also, i'm not overlooking that a thousand leaves has a lot of long songs, i'm also not overlooking "lightnin'". it's that in the sy pantheon, expressway and the diamond sea are an archetype and this year might be the year we see another one of these. |

Maybe chabib can find out the timings of the new songs?
I'd like to know them ,for sure. Good reasoning, Everyneurotic. Fair enough.

I agree with you. it is time for a log sonic skronk freakout.
rain on tin is longish but not like expressway or MOTE or Diamond Sea. I think MOTE negates your theory though yo. MOTE is 9 minutes long, 4.5 minutes of song, followed by 4.5 minutes of the sweetest skronk I have ever ever had the opportunity to wrap my ears around. MOTE!!!! best SY song ever!!! (it changes every day)

Uh, Karen Revisited? Maybe not skronky enough for you? NYC Ghosts and Flowers? Too much of a steady build? "Or," last song on rather ripped, as played by Thurston Moore at the Flywheel was only 4 minutes long. But you never know it could be extended into a longer outro dealy... However the song is mostly real bare and pretty... I get the feeling like any extended noise would be real flowing and pretty only to build into more intense shit later... |

er, sorry to be pessimistic, but 2 songs a pattern dont make. and you completely ignore songs in the same vain on other years, such as (as suggested above), karenology and mote. having said that, it would be darned sweet...
also, the 2 you mention are both final tracks. the next final track is "or", and that did not seem to have a noise outro from thurstons solo version. it did have a feedback breakdown midway thru, but only quite brief...

true, true. but another thing that links expressway and the diamond sea is that they are set closers for excellence. while i'm not sure if mote was ever i closer, it certainly has never been a chronic set closer like expressway or diamond sea; also, mote is not as recognized or beloved by the sy fandom as the other two songs (which is a shame because it rules). these songs are different from the rest of the band's output, including it's long songs. also, i've heard mote live and they usually cut the noise improve short, instead of extending it again, i'm NOT saying expressway and diamond sea are the only two long songs sy have, far from it. too many to count, too many to mention. (if we go like this, then sonic death parts 1 and 2 are also overlooked) i was pointing these two songs and a pattern. whatever, i was just making an observation another observation: none of you have heard rather ripped yet so you never know, and i know it's more probably that i'm wrong than anything else. |

I think Rather Ripped will have another masterpiece,
but I think there are masterpieces in all the albums anyway. Plus, Expressway To Yr Skull just drones away... there isn't that much noise. I think Wildflower Soul deserves to be called a masterpiece if anything. So I don't think there's a mid-decade thing going on. It seems like everyone thinks that this album is going to be beyond words. I think so too and I hope no one gets disappointed. I would love to know the time lengths for Rather Ripped too if that's possible. by the way Mote is 7:37... still a long song
