hey dudes. inspired by reading Ghost World, I recently picked up three other Daniel Clowes titles: 20th Century Eightball, David Boring, and Caricature. I enjoyed them immensely and plan to get Ice Haven and Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron next.
I wondered if anyone knows of any other contemporary cartoonists working in a similar vein. I have made a list of the following names initial internet research over amazon and wikipedia:

jeffrey brown
adrian tomine
charles burns
craig thompson
simone lia
david b.

anyone know of these artists/give me any recommendations?
thanks

I've read some Charles Burn. Black Hole is a trip.

I'm not widely read in graphic novels, but Clowes is a favorite of mine.

To get a good background in the top quality graphic novels

get

Art Spiegelman's MAUS (I got my hardcover copy signed by Mr Spiegelman himself when he visited the Houston Holocaust Museum)

Alan Moore's FROM HELL (highly detailed story about jack the Ripper, a BILLION times better than the movie)
and Alan Moore's WATCHMEN (my single favorite graphic novel.)

Frank Miller's DARK KNIGHT RETURNS is a work of pure sick twisted genius.

i don't like what i've read by craig thompson (goodbye chunky rice) but his book blankets seemed to be quite popular last year

yoshihiro tatsumi is an ace, i've only read one book by him "good bye" and i highly recommend it.

chris ware, get everything by him, he's a true genius. maybe start with "jimmy corrigan: the smartest kid on earth"

daniel clowes, get everything

charles burns - "big baby" and "black hole" are the only things i've read by him, his art work is my favourite in all of comics and he's a great writer too.

harvey pekar - "american splendour" & "bob & harv's comics" the second one a collection of his collaborations with robert crumb

jaime & gilbert hernandez - love and rockets, gilbert is probably my favourite writer in comics, and jaime is excellent too, and they both produce some beautiful drawing.

david b. - epileptic, i wasn't crazy about this book, but my housemate who is epileptic herself thought it was the most insightful articulation of epilepsy she had ever read.

adrian tomine, i've only read one book by him, "summer blonde", i liked it, but you should ask skreaming skull about tomine as she is a big fan of his.

scott mccloud - "understanding comics" i'm reading this at the moment and it's a comic that is an analysis of the mechanics of comics, it's extremely interesting, but probably one to read one you've got more into comics in general.

seth - "it's a good life if you don't weaken"

joe sacco - "safe area gorazde", "palestine" sacco is a journalist and he went to visit these places, palestine in the early 90s, and gorazde during the yugoslav war in the mid 90s, and then wrote these books detailing his experiences and those of other people, the gorazde book is particularly amazing.

peter bagge - hate

secret comics japan - mind fucking collection of japanese underground comics

bizarro comics - underground/independent comics writers get given the opportunity to write for DC comics (superman, batman etc). hilarious.

taiyo matsumoto - black & white

junji ito - uzumaki, weird and ace japanese horror comic about a town that gets goes insane under the spell of spirals.

katsuhiro otomo - akira, everyone has seen the film, but the comic is about 9,000,000 times better. READ IT!

hideshi hino - panorama of hell, another totally fucked japanese horror comic, disturbing and amazing

tony millionaire - maakies, a strip about an alcoholic monkey and an alcoholic crow sailing the high seas as part of the crew of a galleon.

it is not a proper novel, but TRANSMETROPOLITAN is amazing.

I don't read too many comics, but I'm going to look these up a bit more. They sound like a nice work - two styles mixed together.

Concrete by Paul Chadwick is really good. Guy gets turned into a big rock typr creature...it's about how he deals with that basically. Not superhero-y at all. It's great.

my sister writes for these things, and her boyfriend draws. I dont get it myself, but apparantly she has been trying to make a living from it. Truthfully, I can't even remember the website....

http://www.cellardoorpublishing.com

(how sad, I had to google to find my own sister's website)

I don't read graphic novels very often... in fact I'd like to read more. So I'm learning from this thread.

I totally agree with T+B as far as Charles Burns goes... I enjoy his work on many levels.

Ted McKeever is another great... his graphic novel Metropol is fantastic.
