Jim McAdams and was produced under the umbrella of the Olympia Strange Music Society, which Arrington de Dionyso had created earlier in the same year. While Mr. McAdams gladly served as a conduit for the very first event, the festival began through a series of e-mails by fringe music artists from around North America who actively wished to play in Olympia. Thus it could be argued that the first festival really founded itself. Since it's magical beginnings as a group vision on internet mailing lists, the Olympia Experimental Music Festival has been curated by L. Jim McAdams, Arrington de Dionyso, Aerick Duckhugger, Ashley Shomo, Eric Ostrowski, Michael Griffin, Harlan Mark Vale, and Dick Metcalfe (who was also responsible for starting the festival's first ever website). This years chief organizer is KAOS DJ extraordinaire Domenica Clark, and her chief lieutenant is once again L. Jim McAdams (albeit 13 years older). Mr. McAdams booked the Saturday 6/24 lineup, while Ms. Clark is responsible for bringing us the other three equally remarkable nights. The festival continues to move forward every year on the fervent belief that while Olympia is certainly a fertile ground for independent rock music, there are other genres of very visceral music that were and continue to be underrepresented in the "scene". |

I actually started this festival back in '95 (though as the paragraph above says, it really started itself.) This year is honestly, just about the best solid line-up we've ever had. Nice in the age of My Space to be able to preview everything in advance so easily.

Tell me about it! My baby is a teenager now. #7 definitely seems like yesterday. I met one of my best Portland friends at that one, and she's introduced me to 2/3s of the people I know here now. That's her article too, by the way! |

Are you still in Gang Wizard? Tiffany does music herself as Pasiflora. Really cool ambient chick vocal/poetry lyric stuff.

Sorry we've never met, even going back to the 7th Fest when we both played! Downright odd, actually, but the fest has gotten so big I can't always meet everybody anymore, which is cool in a way. I'm not even sure if I'll be able to see everybody play this year, though I'm going to try for as much as I can. |

Hmm. Could be they don't consider themselves an experimental band and therefore didn't ask to play? We certainly weren't "anti-punk" in our booking or anything. A majority of the acts are from outside Olympia, but Oly is represented by about 5 groups. |

KPSU is proud to be bringing to the NW airwaves (and global streamwaves!) two of the performers who will be gracing the stage of the Olympia Eagle's Hall for the 13th Annual Olympia Experimental Music Festival at the end of this month.
First up, on my own What's This Called? program, this Saturday, June 16th from Noon to 1 PM Pacific Time, I'm thrilled to welcome live in the studio Portland OR's own Argumentix! Guaranteed to haunt your soul with his mix of voice and tapes, James Squeaky AKA Argumentix will be playing the 22nd up in Oly, and this set will give you a chance to see why one critic described him as "not unlike Ariel Pink doing musique concrète"! Then, this coming Wednesday, June 20th (just one day before the festival begins up north!) from 6-7 PM on the one and only Church of Blasphuphmus (Not Jesus) Show your dashing host Yet Another Pope Austin Rich is totally stoked to present none other than the pride of Cambridge Pensylvania Oliver Squash! Playing completely original music informed by '60s psych rock and the most nonconforming aspects of the post-punk movement, Mr. Squash is a legend in the underground home-tape trading community. This is his first ever jaunt to the west coast, for just two nights: this radio appearance and the headlining spot Saturday, June 23rd at the Olympia festival. This man plays music that has brought the FCC to his door complaining that he was interfering with air traffic control - and we are not making that up! Both shows will of course stream live from the KPSU website (i.e. RIGHT HERE!) For those lucky enough to be in the Portland OR/Vancouver WA metro area tune into 1450 AM, or if you're really, really lucky and on the Portland State University campus try 98.3 FM for a full on stereo experience! And we'll see y'all at the festival in Oly! |

A couple minor changes have been made to the festival line-up:
JPTR from NYC canceled on Sat. 6/23 and have been replaced by Olympia's own prog-rock casio madman Big Tom the Lithuanian. Tom will be opening the show and the rest of the acts have been moved up one spot. If there were ever a reason to come early BTtL is it! On Sun. 6/24, opener A Garden to Play with Ghost has canceled. As this day was honestly quite overbooked to begin with, we are leaving the line-up as it is. Between the two Sunday shows that's still 8 official acts, plus some unofficial surprises. These changes have been made in the listing above, so it's completely current now. |

Opening Night of the Festival went incredibly well, with all of the artists putting in incredible sets. Audience members were appreciative and open minded. Speakers didn't fall on anybody, and Jenny Jenkins provided top notch sound engineering.
Thanks to the Eagle's Hall (who's facilities coordinator was in the audience snapping photos of Blue Sabbath Black Cheer with the rest of us!), Room 220 Guitars for the use of the PA (which sounded excellent), the audio crew and door people, and of course the artists. We've still got three more nights to set your ears on fire, so if you haven't made it in yet, still time to get started! Tomorrow (actually today now) we've got Alps of New South Wales coming all the way from Australia, so you really don't want to miss this piece of Oly Fest history! |

My band, the Dead Air Fresheners is playing the festival TONIGHT! It is in fact, our 10th Anniversary Show, as our first ever set was opening for Sacharine Trust at the 3rd Oly Fest.
We had lunch today with Alps of New South Wales who has come all the way from Australia and Oliver Squash from New Cambria, PA, who's headlining tomorrow. Very nice blokes. This is going to be very fun stuff. |
