Recommend me some Lou Barlow, please.

Ive got all his stuff with Dinosaur Jr already, but i bought 'Winning Losers' yesterday and i like it. EMOH got a lot of good press, is that a good one to get next??

I really want to get into Lou's solo stuff before i attempt to get into Sebadoh. But if you can recommend me an album they did too then that would be appreciated.

thanks.

I know it's not exactly what you asked for, but why not try the Deep Wound CD that's just come out - Lou and J's first band. I'm not a massive Sebadoh fan. I've tried to like them but so far haven't found anything I've been that convinced by.

The first two Sebadoh records were essentially Lou solo albums with Eric doing back-up and some tracks vice versa. The Freed Man and Weed Forestin, are to me the best thing that either of the two of them ever did by a long shot. Brilliant acoustic (mostly) 4 track experimental pop with bittersweet lyrical genius. I don't find that Sebadoh's material afterwards, nor Lou's other incarnations, suck, but I also don't find much of it to measure up to the initial greatness.

The only Lou stuff after Dinosaur that I've heard is the Sebadoh albums III and Bakesale. III has a lot more acoustic stuff in it than Bakesale. I like both a lot though.

actually sebadoh started out more of eric's project w/ lou contributing songs and bass along the way.(as confirmed at the Spaceland show...)

weed forestin' was ok, but sebadoh really shined during III. that really married their tape recording style and made some of their acoustic songs come to life(although i wonder if Superchunk actually released brand new love electric first?).

i would say the drop off happened when eric left.

why would DEEP WOUND be a good start? i'm not sure if any of you guys have ever heard deep wound, but lou didn't even sing and some of the guitar solos on the deep wound 7"(i got it years ago) were done by j mascis anyways(who played drums on it).

bad start, deep wound reflects nothing what lou is or has been about in the last 20+ years.

if you want LOU and not sebadoh, i would recommend SENTRIDOH. that is purely LOU. if sebadoh is what you're interested in, do III/Smash yr head/bubble & scrape. Bakesale sounded like a great band that had ok songs but definitely took a step back from bubble & scrape and also sounded like a rushed and weak finished album, although it was alright.

Bakesale by Sebadoh contains probably my ever-favourite indie rock track "Drama Mine", although it doesn't seem much of a fan favourite.

On the basis of my experience of seeing Lou Barlow doing a solo live show, I wouldn't bother. he reminded me of Randy Newman. (it's worth noting, though, that I'm not much of a solo singer-songwriter person)

If i got your taste right, you might really enjoy 'Harmacy'.It's got 'Beauty Of The Ride' on it,which is a really good song .The lyrics tend to be a bit silly but there are some good songs on it.Sebadoh live,as i've said before, were rubbish.

Yea, most of what was said is said right. Seba sucked later and were great early.

As far as lou goes solo- I've only heard EMOH and some scattered sentridoh/else--- it's not bad stuff, but it also doesn't grab yr attention. That mark going mainly to 'lou barlow and friends' which is half great and half skippable if yr actually listening to them.

anyone seen them sebadoh on the reunion tour yet? I know they're touring now and the fans have been giving positive feedback to it. Gaffney has even written some new songs for the shows and there are rumors of a new sebadoh album with him on it.

Don't get "The Sebadoh" or "Harmacy", the goodness stops at "Bakesale"... Lou to me though became a pansy though and writes songs about one subject, and one subject only and that subject in his style gets "tiresome".
