How to explain who are Sonic Youth and what kind of music are they playing to someone who doesn't know much about indie rock or music in general? I usually use term „koolest band in the world“ but that doesn't say much about their music so when I start talking about their work, people get confused and still don't know wtf am I talking about. So how…?

just tell them it is avant garde rock and let them figure it out!

give them sister, then Daydream nation, then washing machine, then if they don;t like it roll up a copy of experimental trash jet set boring and shove it up their asses!

There's not much point explaining, in my experience (perhaps I just explain badly!), just play them something not too extreme and see if they bite.

it is a very hard thing to try and do. i am always met with puzzled, confused looks when i try to explain it. usually people say something about not liking that sort of thing and it not being music and i let them trail off and get on with their boring lives.
