Yo dOOdz
So this thread is going to make you laugh at me, as this is VERY like this: or maybe more like that: Tonight, my wife spilled a full glass of -nice - white wine one the laptop. It went nuts and died. just like that. bah. It's not like it's a catastrophe and i'll tell why just below; but i bought that nice Toshiba about 3 years ago off my best mate who was selling it for 400 euros. At that time it was an ok deal as it was about 3 years old. Which means it's about 6 to 7 years old now. So it's not a knackered HOT piece of futuristic technology here but rather an old crappy laptop; but it was GOOD for it was being used for ie just sitting there in the living room ready to browse the web and post hot pictures of hot girls on SYG or marvel at the sight of the shitty font of The Eternal cover art, and/or do a little bit of word processing or checking out our flickr or whatever. BUT you know i paid it a fair amount of money so i'm kind of like that right now: not forgetting THIS: so i will thrash the knackered piece of shit tomorrow morning as i have NO HOPE whatsoever to make it work again. What keeps me from actually really killing my wife is that we both (being both teachers) are going to be GIVEN a brand new laptop EACH by the state next week. Talk about destiny. It's a new state policy to give a laptop to each pupil and teacher so we can all dive in the digital era so it's designed to enable us to make more web-related activities with the pupils, basically. So to cut it short, we'll use my wife's new laptop for the living-room (upgrade yo!). BUT i wanted to use mine NOT for work-related activities but to set up a new convenient recording space. So i want to buy a good enough sound card, install cubase or protools if it comes with the soundcard and just get going. The question is: is this laptop good enough to record stuff? and this is the aim of this thread. So i'm going to describe that thing with the info i have and you can tell me if it's good enough to run audio activities. it's a TOSHIBA Satellite Pro L300 Processor : intel pentium Dual core T3200 (2.OO ghz, cache 1MBL2, bus 667Mhz) memory 2048Mo HDD 120GO sata what do you computer-savvy people think? thx for yr time. PS: yes people are dying in the streets and the state spends our hardearned money to offer careless students a FREE LAPTOP EACH. Don't ask. |

your post is too long. Even with the funny pictures, I grew bored by the middle. So to answer your question: I never actually got to your question. Sorry about that.

Here is a summary of the best of the cream of the above long post minus the fun:

will have to be on the look out for an efficient nice little external soundcard then. The shit part is i want to be able to record drums with it on separate tracks... at least 4 simultaneous tracks for a basic but mixable drum sound (kick/snare/charley/overhead/toms if need be).... these little MOTU cost a shitload of money... i think i'd rather invest in a tascam multitracker or else. not sure. |

yes you can, by far.
but mulitrackers are nicer to work with. I hate using a computer for recording/mixin etc all students in germany have to pay to be able to study plus they have to buy their own laptops....grrrr |

^^ wel the thing is i'm really NOT sure about the multitracker VS soundcard issue.
I've own lots of multitrackers in the past. I really enjoy working in a cubase / protools environment because of the visual side of the editing. I guess i can upload each track and mix/work in cubase / protools afterward which would save me lots of $$$ for a trendy soundcard. multritrackers come cheap these days. |

I like to have some hardware where I can work on and let my ears decide. the experience I made with DAWs is that I am working to much with my eyes for my liking. and its about music, and listening etc. so I dont wanna put some parameters into any kind of filter and stop listening to what I do. Iam speaking about my experiences and no I am not biased in any way |

I'm ignoring all replies, as most people here are full of shit.
1. Rinse the fucker with water - wine has things that aren't water in it - mostly sugars. Sugards are not the friend of motherboards. 2. Leave it to dry, preferably suspended, for a while. Water is only really the enemy of metal connections, and a smidge of it won't be the end of the world. 3. Leave it to dry for over a week, preferably in a nice warm room. 4. If sugar is involved, you're fucked. 5. DO NOT under any cirucmstances take the advice of people on the internet. [this includes me, except I'm right this time]

Ah. I didn't read the initial post properly. I'm saying your computer's not fucked; you're saying something I don't care about.
Epic stuff thing.
