I'm doing a report on the origins and progression of alternative rock. what do u think are the essential bands i should include? so far i have the velvet underground, talking heads, rem, pixies, the cure, pavement, sonic youth, radiohead, beck, the smiths, television, iggy pop, dinosaur jr, janes addiction, guided by voices, flaming lips, husker du, meat puppets, nirvana, smashing pumpkins, david bowie, pj harvey, violent femmes. any suggestions are appreciated.

Are you? At The Drive-In are not only a huge influence on so much "alternative rock," not to mention they are a progression from lots of the shit mentioned.

I see them more as post-hardcore. They name check Fugazi and Drive Like Jehu in nearly every interview.
Also they missed the whole "alternative rock" late 80's/early 90's boat. That shit has sailed on. |

I don't really think of like, the Velvet Underground, The Smiths and Husker Du as "alternative rock" either, but apparently mr. threadstarted does. I'm just saying what I think deserves mention as an "important" rock band from the past little while.

Cool. Alternative rock is such a vaguely vague term.
Of course so are college rock, indie rock, post-hardcore, or whatever else the major mags call it. |

i remember a time when people did their own research when writing a paper and didn't use shitty internet bbs' but went out on the street and interviewed people and hit the pubs and clubs when researching this type of material, but i also guess these young kids are so fucking lazy they don't or can't even do their own study and they should end up being a fucking factory worker for the rest of their lives...... guess you can tell i had an average day....... |

the origins of alt rock... go back a bit.... you have t include the oikes of bill hailey, buddy holly, the sonics, the kinks, little richard. alt rock is a underground roots movement tat is there to piss off the mainstream so acts that may appear mainstream now were certainly "punk" 60 yeas ago....
do not leave out the sonics! |

Loop
Jesus And Mary Chain Felt Mudhoney etc etc etc I wouldn't leave out bands like the ones that you find on the Nuggets compilations, simply because they were tremendously influential on other bands that went on to form the core of this evil beast that they call alternative music, both musically and aesthetically. Just think about bands like The Third Bardo and the like, and it would all make sense. The Third Bardo |
