Just hours after news broke that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia had passed away, Mitch McConnell was already turning the unfortunate news into a power grab.

Senate Majority Leader McConnell rushed out a radical claim: That the Senate should shirk its constitutional duty to consider and confirm Supreme Court nominees, simply because it's an election year.

That's not how it worked when Ronald Reagan nominated Anthony Kennedy to the Supreme Court. The Democratic-led Senate confirmed him unanimously in an election year, 1988.

The U.S. Constitution specifically states that the Senate should give "advice and consent" on Supreme Court nominations by the president.

The Constitution has no exception for election years.

It's clear that McConnell is looking for any excuse to block President Obama from naming another justice to the Supreme Court.

He knows what we all know. The future of reproductive rights, overturning Citizens United, protecting labor rights, and Obama's Clean Power Plan all hang in the balance.

If the Democrats have any brains, they will pound and pound on this issue. As Steve Hayes of MSNBC has noted, the Democrats didn't block Clarence "Yassuh, Boss" Thomas from being on the Court. They need to repeatedly tie this to the GOP's scorched earth obstructionism and a further example of why Republicans can't be trusted with power.

Speaking of Thomas, whatever will he do without Massa Antonin to guide him?

President Obama said he will naturally carry out his constitutional responsibility to name a Supreme Court replacement in due time.

But Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans have doubled down on their radical position that they will block ANYONE President Obama nominates, no matter how qualified.

No hearings. No vote. Nothing.

Extremist presidential candidate Senator Ted Cruz has joined the fray soon after Justice Scalia’s passing, saying the Senate should "ensure that the next President names his replacement" and that he would "absolutely" try to filibuster anyone the president nominates.¹

Another senator running for president, Marco Rubio, ridiculously claimed that presidents "stop nominating" judges in their last year. PolitiFact rated the statement simply "False."²

The president has said he will carry out his responsibility under the Constitution to fill the opening at the Supreme Court. The Senate needs to do its job, too.

I always loved this myth. Dude..... the government would LOVE citizens to have an armed insurrection they could kill everyone with absolute impunity indeed with global support!

Further how and in what universe are any citizens armed and equipped to successfully resist the government through raising of arms?? Seriously? Think this through...

Its not 1789 anymore.. if (and its a huge if) the "Founding Fathers" intended the 2nd Amendment as a means for citizens to protect themselves from government that was in a world where the weapons of military were literally no different than the weapons owned by common people.. today?
