Nels Cline's Lovers album is out on August 5th. It's his debut on Blue Note Records and is available now for preorder on CD, vinyl and digital download. A double-album featuring originals, standards and covers, Lovers offers an update on the 'mood music' idea and ideal, challenging our iconic notion of romance along the way. It was recorded with an ensemble of 23, and conducted and arranged by Michael Leonhart.

The live debut of Lovers will premiere at Newport Jazz Festival on July 31, with additional dates in April 2017 at UCLA Royce Hall in Los Angeles and SFJazz in San Francisco.

I have been dreaming about, planning, and re-working my rather obsessive idea of this record for well over twenty-five years, and it was always going to be called Lovers. It is meant to be as personal in its sound and in its song selection as it is universal in its endeavor to assay or map the parameters of “mood” as it once pertained, and currently pertains, to the peculiar and powerful connection between sound/song and intimacy/romance. In this, I hope Lovers offers something of an update of the “mood music” idea and ideal, while celebrating and challenging our iconic notion of romance.

I don't see a vocalist listed, but there are "lyrics by" in the credit. I'm hoping that it's still instrumental takes. Either way, I am beyond excited. This is going to be awesome.

"It Only Has To Happen Once" is actually from Lindsay & Scherer's Ambitious Lovers project... Not that it makes it any less cooler.

I feel that in addition to his "mood music about romance" goal, Nels is consciously expanding the definition of "the great American songbook" (even though, OK, not all composers are Unitedstatesians*). With SO many recent stabs at it, mostly dismal (Rod Stewart, whose talent commited suicide in 1975), a few great (Dylan), it's like Cline is saying, Look ding dongs, this is a living, organic and growing thing, and Sonic Youth and Annette Peacock are as much a part of it as Rodgers & Hammerstein.

In that sense, it's not Nels' first time: when he did Interstellar Space Revisited with Gregg Bendian, he acknowledged he was trying to fight The Marsalis Bible On Jazz History and push the notion that fiery free jazz, electric Miles and early Weather Report belong in the jazz continuum just as Louie Armstrong or Charlie Parker do.

Maybe the best things in life come in stages? Seriously, this is an exciting day for it marks the digital release of my double album Lovers on Blue Note Records, a concept album of sorts featuring (at the most) 22 stellar musician comrades playing music of mine as well as from other sources, all arranged and conducted by the protean Michael Leonhart.

Produced by my good friend David Breskin, it features 19 songs (18 tracks) recorded and mixed by Ron Saint Germain and mastered by Joe Gastwirt, and now you can hear it! Those of you who, like me, enjoy holding an object and absorbing artwork (in this case by Angela DeCristofaro) and reading liner notes and detailed credits, please be patient. The double compact disc package emerges August 19th - delayed by a slight manufacturing hiccup - and the double vinyl hits September 2nd - delayed because we are insuring the best possible pressings. But for all of you downloaders, this is your time! Please enjoy.
