i was at her deep listening retreat in 2012 in rosendale NY.
the first night there were 30 or 40 people in a room and we all performed one of her pieces. i can't remember what the title was but we all started to sing a note at the same time. then we all had to pick a note that someone else was singing and then sing that note. on and on... i think it lasted 8 or 10 minutes. it was pretty amazing. my whole body felt electric at the end. i got to hear and see pauline perform a duet with susie ibarra on the last day. rest in peace |

She did a couple of interesting things when I saw her (2oo2?). When you entered the theater, there were baskets of rocks and her first piece was a "rock clicky" thing. I kind of wanted to throw my rocks thru a large window, which would have been an interesting percussive add-on....the other one was to have all of the audience do a "vowel sound". The staid audience did a lot of pear shaped "oooo's and aaaah's" mostly. I'd just gotten over a bad cold, so couldn't project, but I really wanted to do a real hard, screamy "EEEEEE!" She did an accordion solo that was, frankly, loop abuse. All in all, interesting show.

I saw her perform in the late 80's. A couple of years later, I sat a few years behind her when AMM performed at Rice University......she saw and heard sound in so many different ways.

She was certainly an original. I wish I had learned about earlier in life. I saw her at Tonic and either Issue Project Room or Vision Fest. Sad loss, espcially because she seemed to be very active in working with younger people and opening them up to new techniques and sounds.
PAULINE OLIVEROS/NEW CIRCLE QUINTET #Tonic, NYC 17 Jan 01 50 VG+ early set in terms of Greenlight's comments, but I just learned that Connie Crothers passed away in August, she was huge around certain jazz circles, and had worked with Oliveros. In 2014, Connie was selected for a week residency at The Stone, from August 19 to 24, 2014. She performed twelve sets, each set with a different lineup of musicians. The duet set with Pauline Oliveros was chosen for the critics pick in the music section in Time Out magazine. |
