My job was tearing/punching out magnets and packing them into boxes. I only have a week of it left and then I'm a free. I do have to start looking for another job though, but I think most things are preferable to working 8-hour stretches of intense magnet handling.

I couldn't really deal with the pointless aspect of my job.

I suppose they put them into something, after all it's not totally pointless dealing with them. But I can understand your point.

What kind of magnets? Quirky home-spun humor refrigerator magnets?

I worked at a music/software distribution warehouse...walking by shelves full of black flag albums was pretty cool...but the job sucked...I drove these fucked up forklifts and smashed into a pallet full of Pet Sounds box sets with it once...I walked out one night and never went back...flourescent lights, dust and no windows rob your soul.

exactly-- and of this kind. bricklaying would be more interesting, there is an art to it.

luxes, how about looking for work at a local newspaper? they pay might not be much but you could enter the wonderful world of writing for hire. eh??

any job really, it's kinda like an apprenticeship, once you get in you start moving.

then there's people who need stuff written for the internet. it's a bit trickier, but there's a huge market for it it seems.

I hate newspaper writing, and journalism as a whole. We have a local paper and everything, it's really retarded. I struggled in Newspaper class in high school because I would always lie and embelish things, and put in jokes that weren't easily identifiable as jokes. So sometimes they would get past the teacher, but I would get in trouble for it later when someone else brought it to her attention.

One guy I know (my age) does record reviews online. I suspect he doesn't get paid for it though, as no one cares and he only listens to jam bands.

I'm doing manual labor because I didn't want to work in customer service. The problem with my job is that it doesn't really fit my idea of manual labor because it's the easiest job in the world, and we just stand in one place all day, hunched over our tables, punching out magnets. It does a number on my back because I have scoliosis and my back gets really aggravated whenever it's in the same position for a certain period of time. A few times when I've been there, we've had to work on the same order all day (usually we work on many orders throughout the day, which is easier on my back because you're sort of switching up the motions you have to do, because not all magnets are the same obviously), and when we work on the same order all day, the pain in my back is unbearable and I really feel like throwing up. So instead of getting my back fixed which I don't think is possible, I am just going to get a different job. But anyway, when I originally got this job, they told me that I would be doing a lot of heavy lifting and moving around, which isn't true at all.

So I'll probably go into customer service. When you're 18 and just out of high school, it doesn't matter what skills you have. No employer is going to care unless you have a college degree in it. I'm not complaining, that's just the way it is. Us degree-less people are going to have to take the unskilled jobs. I can't expect anyone to give me a job in anything that I actually have an interest in just because I tell them I have an interest in it (and even if I'm good at it, that doesn't mean anything either).

Oh, and our magnet factory is supposedly the biggest one in the country, or so I've been told. It is called Magnet. We work on a lot of different things, not just magnets, but most things are magnet-related at least. We worked on an enormous order for Rolling Stone magazine a while ago. And various sporting teams (this time of the year it's been pro baseball). But there are also smaller orders for business card magnets and such. There is a wide range of stuff.

One of my friends was trying to talk me into joining a commune. But if I did that, I'd feel like I would have to reproduce, and that's not something I want to do.

^^hm, i see. i've had a lot of shitty jobs, even with a degree (in english, of course-- nothing is worse for your employment).

if you hate customer service, how about going into a temp agency & ask what they have? it's a fun way to try all manner of unskilled jobs-- i've done mailrooms & answering phones & fixing databases & putting newsletters together & all kinds of crap. all you need is to know how to type and some office clothes. an older friend of mine (an old ex-hippie) reported once he used to do things from landscaping to house painting in a different type of temp agency.

of course those jobs require that you have the day free to work & you have school, right? hmmm..... a difficult decision.

well at least i hope you find something decent. some large businesses that are ok with their employees include starbucks (im not kidding), costco (ask synthetically if you dont believe me), whole foods...

anyway, look at this:
http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortu...007/index.html

if that doesn't work, i agree with you newspaper writing is shit, & magazines is better. but you're not bound to make a lot of money from it unless it's PR or marketing or something like that.

that reminds me i have a deadline (for which i don't get paid, i do it for the glory, ha ha ha); i need to eat something & get to work.

have a fun weekend & enjoy your freedom.

Thanks for the advice. It's not that I hate customer service, it's just that I don't think I'm great with people. But I probably don't give myself enough credit in that area either.

I only have school for another month (less than that actually) so it's not a major factor I have to consider when looking for another job, as the job may only be for the summer. If I work full time and save enough money, I might not have to work during the next school year, which would be a great thing.

I also found out recently that after my fall semester is completed, I will have enough credits to graduate with an Associate's degree. That in itself is a good thing, but the bad part is that I'll have to transfer to a university or something in the middle of the year, and complete the spring semester there instead of at community college where I originally thought I would be. This is bumming me out because I don't want to leave home yet. I really hated college life when I tried it out for one semester and I don't wish to repeat that experience any time soon.

I had a simular thing. Until this year I really didnt feel ready to go off to university. So even though I had more than enough grades and points to get into to university I went back to Sixth Form for another year and did some more subjects. It was crazy I know. But now im really excited about university. Its because I feel ready to leave home and enter another period of my life. You should leave when you feel ready and it feels like the right time in your life.
