Include the band's actual genre and what they are mislabeled as.
eg. Melvins are Sludge/Stoner/Doom Metal but are often labeled as Grunge by those who have heard Houdini (which I still think isn't very grungy).

In that case:
I would hardly classify Battles as Math Rock. I'm not saying it's unrelated, but they're far more experimental than math.
And Slint should be referred to as Math Rock more commonly than Post Rock.

Genres don't mean a thing to me. That's why I always tend to use quotation marks when using one. Most bands are mis-genre-casted. Which is a reason I don't think they hold much weight at all, not to mention people put far too much emphasis on them, like they have to classify the band/music rather than listening to the damn thing.

We're all victims of it from time to time. Some more than others.

The only way to find out if a band's genre is mislabelled is to ask them what genre they intended to be. And 99% of bands questioned will say that they don't see themselves as being part of a genre. The other 1% will be made up of teenagers who will categorise themselves as either stoner/doom and teenagers who will categorise themselves as noise.

I still think that genre is important, as it gets you into a lot of new music.

I always found that most bands put their sound under what they want to be, whether they sound like that or not.

Actually genre doesn't bother me that much, unless people mislabel bands, that just pisses me off.

generally if youre in a band tho, or as at least for me anyways, i usually take a few influences and try to at least shoot for a certain sound.

How about some artists who's genre's are often mislabled with genre's that people just pull out of their ass. Like Math rock, or sludge metal, or etc etc etc

pink floyd is often mislabeled as progressive rock, which is not really a genre at all, it's a media-friendly term that doesn't mean anything. i don't know what the fuck they're supposed to mean by progressive...they got the "rock" bit right though.

all this genre business has really gotten a bit out of control. i don't know where people come up with terms like "post-rock" and "math-rock" and whatnot. i don't know what some of this shit is.

glam rock, space rock, psychedelic rock -- ok, yeah, that all makes sense. even shoegaze makes sense if you know why it's called that (although it does little to nothing to foreshadow the sound of the music, then again either does any other genre if you think about it)

i don't understand the ins and outs of the music business so therefore unless you have in your hand a reasonable record contract for me and aren't going to make up a brand new genre every time a new band comes out, KISS MY ASS.

I've been concentrating on band stuff lately, but I should be getting more into that again in spring or summer I imagine. I still theoretically have a track slated for an upcoming compilation, but I haven't heard any projected release info from the label so I'm not sure when that's happening exactly.
