Yeah - no shit.

I wasn't planning to go out tonight, but my friend rang and wanted to catch-up. We met up near Flinders St. Station (our main train station here in Melbourne) and went across the road to check out some art installation festival. My friend asked if I had rolled a joint and luckily for him, I had.

We walked across to this park and found a dark, secluded spot to smoke the thing. We had just finished it when this group of about 8-9 wired-up teens show up and ask for some dope. We tell them that we've just finished it and don't have any more so they ask for ciggies. My mate gave them a couple and we start to walk off but they're following us asking for a light. One of them started pushing me and that's when it hit that we were in trouble.

We both turned to run and my friend got away but I ran straight into a park bench where three of them surrounded me and pinned me down on the bench. One of them had me in a choke hold while the other two start demanding my wallet and going through my pockets while laying a few punches and kicks on me here and there. They got my wallet, crappy mobile phone and my cigarettes before one of them tells me that:

"Don't you think of going to the cops, coz I'll find you. Don't fuck with us - we're like fucking marines.."

They let me go at that point and I ran like hell towards a main road. That was the end of it and I made it to safety - without any money, ID, phone (or fags) - and then I realised I'd left my bag behind which had a fairly funky digital camera in it.

Long story short - I went to the cop shop and reported it. My mate turned up later but he was okay and my bag turned up as well (minus the funky camera).

So I'm back home now. I feel calm but anxious. It's weird being just another statistic in the big city....

when I got beaten up the last time a friend of mine was in trouble and I could have get away, but I turned round and punched one of the 7 (man-like) guys straight in the face, so there were "only" 6 left, 3 for me and 3 for him. they trashed us completely those bastards

Horrible that the place you felt you had to go and smoke was the very type of place where they felt they could attack you.

I've been in situations like this both when I had a friend or friends with me and also when I have been all alone by myself. And I've successfully diffused them all. Unless they are waving a gun or knife then I'm not going to even think about what I do to them. Just think of it as "helping" them as you put one on the ground and then bloody his face badly so that the rest lose morale really quickly. But be sure not to let yourself get jumped from behind. It doesn't take a lot of adrenalized force, it just takes calm, precise movements and leverage.

Of course, when I was younger and had speedy legs and good lung power I would just have ran away.

I can give everyone the advice to carry the most powerful pepper spray you can get and when you feel like something like this may be going down take it and your cellphone out and just try and maintain a distance of beyond arm's reach of any potential attackers. If they are sweating heavily or have crazy eyes with dilated pupils, then don't bother with pepper spray though, because it isn't going to do anything to them. In that case you should always run at your first opportunity, and never taunt them, and chances are they won't feel like running after you.

But personally, if some teens without knives or guns were trying to rob me, I'd fight back like a mad man and try to bolt.

But then again I'm 6'4" and could probably take a few guys with ease.

Well yeah... cops. When I reported what happened, the first thing I wanted was a glass of water because my mouth was really dry. That took a fucking half hour and then the cop who took my statement and typed it up lacked basic grammar. No help...
