Yesterday, as I was walking up the stairs to our apartment, I hear sounds coming from my neighbor's door. I heard a cool riffing rhythm and thought, "No way! What is he listening to?" because my neighbor ussually listens to and plays on his guitar the most bland "indie-inflected genero rock" around, and it surprised me. I stood there for about a minute trying to figure out what he was playing and if I had heard it before, and it sounded GOOD to my ears man. Real good.
After about a minute of just standing there listeing, wondering what my neighbor was getting into and who introduced him to this noisy cacophony, it hit me. I WAS LISTENING TO HIS FUCKING WASHER/DRYER MACHINE!!!!!! for like a fucking full minute, and I got into it! It sounded real good to me! Fuck. so I walked into my apartment in disbelief. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

YES! One time I was in the rest room and I swore I heard music playing really softly and it turned out to be the A/C had just kicked on! I mean, I could HEAR the music! The notes, the melodies, everything!

That happens to me with road noise. I've gotten the same tingle up my spine from squealing brakes that I get from shronk.

But are you making music out of it in your head, or do you actually think it's music playing only to find out that it isn't?

It ias probably both, at first it is just sounds, and then yr mind makes patterns from it. humans are pattern recognition machines.
plus the washing machine sounded better than many noise records I ahve heard!!

I usually hear different rhythms and pulses whilst riding my bike. I guess the traffic, the sound of the wind, sometimes the rain, it all blends really well and sometimes I stop and think that I hear MUSIC.

I always hear music in my head. Environmental sounds can easily confuse my brain and other times I just HAVE to make music in my head especially if I'm doing something monotonous.

for the past few days ive been listening to the little melodies that the dripping water in makes in my bath tub. ive been figuring them out and might make a song out of it.
listening to the melodies that people create when they talk is always cool too. |

I had a kitchen that was particularly bad for this. One day I'll have two fridges again.

this thread is like coming home. I always thought I am starting to get insane at those points. I always start to nod my head when some fridges start the cooling system, and this rattling short before it goes on. my head goes down, I wait for the kickdrum, and then I wake up.

YES, Rob! This one time I was walking up to your apartment and I heard these fantastic guitar riffs coming from your neighbor's apartment, and then I realized it was just his laundering machinery!!! I must have stood there for a full minute before it hit me.

It happened to me the other day, but the washing machine went onto its radical new "Preset 3" direction which as a fan of the early stuff frankly alienated me from all its future output.

Your sonic confusion is reminding me of a habit confusion I had today.
I've on and off smoked for the past 10 years, and I've been on an 'off' for the past year (except for when drinking). I was talking with a co-worker today when I grabbed hold of a tooth-pick. While speaking, I realized that I had just made a smoking gesture with the toothpick - pinching it between thumb and pointer, bringing it to mouth, pushing hand out for a second ("exhale") and bringing it down. What the?????? |

So spooky reading a thread where people post about washing machines making noises 'cause ours has been behaving oddly all day, yesterday. I think satan is operating it from behind the scenes.

I generally hear the more noises on my way to work, 'cause the area is being re-built/re-modelled in time for the Olympics, plus the water pipes near The City have been worked on for a while to replace them with new ones. The whole place looks like a very busy building site, so in the morning it sounds like Whitehouse are playing live in the open air.

My first ever 'jam' was around a neighbours house. I got busy hitting the strings on his guitar with an empty plastic litre bottle of 7up (I'd just purchased Bad Moon Rising) and really started to think I was onto something, until went downstairs and his dad said with a definite sense of relief that he thought there was something wrong with the water pipes.
