I have been trying to edit some scenes together and keep running into all these little mental stumbling blocks. Basically, I am doing a movie with 5 different stories put together. I am just going insane trying to edit this bitch, should I have all the stories be completely separate and independent? Should I try to link them? Should I cut to all the different stories happening at the same time? Or would that be too confusing? I am thinking of just keeping them all separate, one whole story and then moving to the next... but then I keep thinking, maybe I should have SOMETHING linking them, some narration or some character holding it all together.. what am I trying to say? am I trying to say anything? Maybe this paragraph should be in the movie! AHhhh!
I dunno why I am posting this. But if anyone wants to fart, feel free. |

The question is: ARE the stories related or not? Would you be trying to artificially connect them?
But I'd say edit them independently for now--you'll have to do it anyway. And I would think that would make it easier to decide whether they sould be intercut. Once you have the building blocks, you can play mix and match and see what you like.

parallel editing with more than three stories could be incredibly confusing. if the stories aren't linked firmly enough it is a waste of time trying to link them. if there are no really firm ties then you will find super large hole in your plots and narrative structures. i would probably just edit them seperately then put them end to end with somewhat like Night On Earth.

relate them weirdly or just don't and see what patterns emerge.
i say you can go more confusing than you probably think you can, and you should. |

when in doubt just do what kuleshov would do: interconnect shots from each of the five stories so they appear to be related.

read some theory of montage. good shit. or not-- DO the montage, let the professors theorize. just know/remember that superimposed images create its own meaning separate from continuity editing.

Agreed, but why stop there? Have the final scene feature high school Mike Patton alone in his room. After some time he'll remove his shirt to reveal a close-up of a tattoo on his chest of a totally brutal American eagle, with one of the Obama kids crushed in each of his talons, Sasha all rag-doll and drained of her blood. The eagle will also be pecking at and drawing out the intestines from a two-headed Matthew Shepherd (the second head will be Jimmy Carter's) chained to a cliff. Way Promethean. It'll be one huge allegory for states' rights and zero tolerance for gun laws. Then high school Mike Patton will look directly into the camera, bite his lip, and fist pump, FREEZE FRAME, and then Thin Lizzy's 'Return of the Farmer's Son' will start up and play through the credits.

i like when separate stories get loosely connected, like in bure baruta or slacker. you don't nescessarily have to have meaningful interaction between the characters from the different plots, like if you had a story in a convenience store someone from a different story could buy something from there and leave before the robbery or whatever, and people watching would be like "hey that's the guy with the mike patton shirt on the bus"
or you could add another story where there's a mike patton performance and the people from all the stories show up, because obviously anyone cool enough to make a movie about would never miss a patton show |

is there a movie about mike patton that doesn't have his music? i haven't heard any of it and i don't want to risk it because it might suck and ruin my godly image of him, people seem really flawless when you don;t know anything about them

Firecracker doesn't have any, I don't think. Of course, that's not "about" him, he's just in it, he plays two roles.
