no problem.

1.billy bauer-don't know a lot about him but he played a lot with lennie tristano
he's from the 50s and i think he has one record under his own name. this would go well w/ wes montgomer

2.johnny smith-don't know much about him. he is from the 50s so he is the middle point between charlie christian and wes montgomery. i think he tends to be somewhat mellow.

3.tal farlow-bebop guitar also from the 50s. i think he is probably a little more aggressive than johnny smith

get this-
-----red norvo trio w/ tal farlow and charles mingus------

4.jim hall!!!!-started in the late 50s and is still playing. definitely not avante garde but he touches on it here and there. he is not a flashy player but what
he plays is so perfect.

get this-
sonny rollins w/ jim hall-the bridge

5.grant green-60s soul jazz guitar. don't know much about him but he seems to be the man for that kind of playing.

??????

6.john mclaughlin-rooted in traditional jazz began really playing in the late 60s. was on the first "fusion" record-

get these-
tony williams lifetime- emergency----bad ass record!!! aggressive as fuck jazz/rock drumming with a hammond b3 organ and john mclaughlin on electric guitar. this shit gets pretty out! the whole record is very aggressive. get it!

john mclaughlin-extrapolation

7.mary halvorson - she's been playing nyc for the past 10 years or so. not a lot of traditional jazz with the swing rhythm tho it's buried in there somewhere. she writes really great songs that mix lots of stuff together noise/rock/jazz/etc....

this-
mary halvorson trio/quintet-saturn sings

8.kurt rosenwinkel - playing from the 90s till now. the jazz guitar player of the the last few generations. some really great modern jazz. a truly unique improviser and composer. he can play all of the old standards and sound true to the tradition while at the same time sounding completely of this time and not just a throw back.

this-
kurt rosenwinkel-the next step

9.nels cline-for me he is the perfect balance between sonic youth and jazz.

this-
nels cline trio- chest

no love for derek bailey, huh?

most are of the avant/imporv field of jazz for me...

IMO Masayuki Takayanagi was one of the best straddling trad. jazz technique and pretty far out forward thinking sound blasts. the godfather of japanese noise guitar!

derek bailey would probably be the first to say he was not a jazz guitarist though that was undoubtedly his upbringing. he seemed to think of himself as a "non idiomatic" improviser and not a jazz musician.

all that said ms. noisefield yeah you should check out derek bailey's record "ballads". he actually plays old standards that wes montgomery might play but then the improvising is mostly in his "non idiomatic" style. ie very abstract.

I'm definitely looking for either the classics that I've overlooked, or more freaky experimental stuff.

thats true he has/would say that he isn't a jazz guitarist, but an improvisor... however before he delved deeply in improvisation he was a session guitarist for alot of traditional jazz bands playing more or less traditional jazz technique.

Listening to 'Gateway' by John Abercrombie (w/ Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland). 'Back-Woods Song', the opening track, is particularly incredible.

Pat Martino some of his work with Eric Kloss is just killer

my E# recco's would certainly include Psychoacoustic and Psychoacoustic Blackburst, anything with Carbon as well. 1st Terraplane disc 2 is also something else
