Okay I think we can all guess the winner but hey we're had a 00's and 90's one (sorry im a terrible completist and couldn't sleep at night if i didn't finish all the decades off, yet another slave to OCD.. but hey you're all on an internet forum your no better than me!), plus the 80's is my favourite Sonic Youth decade. Although I don't much care for 'The Sonic Youth EP' and 'Confusion is Sex'. Everything from 'Bad Moon Rising' to 'Daydream Nation' touches me in a way very few pieces of music can. Their music in this period is so full of nostalgia, rage and ironically...utter joy! Although I have to go with the majority and claim 'Daydream Nation' as my favourite, its only by a very small margin, 'Bad Moon Rising', 'Evol' and 'Sister' are among the finest records ever put out in the history of rock music and its a shame they have to exist in the shadow of such a mammoth album. Man if only i could have been 16/17/18 when these records came out and heard them in their original context.....
00's winner - Sonic Nurse 90's winner - Washing Machine

I went with Sister, as that is my current favorite.
Though I owe more to Daydream Nation because no other album has hit me as hard as it has. My list: Sister Daydream Nation EVOL (though I think all 3 are pretty much equal) Bad Moon Rising Confusion Sonic Youth then... The Whitey Album, way down there |

hmm i would say:
Daydream Nation Bad Moon Rising/EVOL (joint second) Sister Whitey Album Confusion is Sex Sonic Youth (honestly Merzbow at its most abrasive is more tuneful, my ears can't stand the assualt...it kills my happy!)

It's BMR by a hairs breadth for me at the moment... it's always that one or Confusion Is Sex that have to fight it out when I'm confronted with such an impossible question to answer... but hey, I love the internal conflict.
I'm going to say something controversial now in response to what Washing Machine said... "Man if only i could have been 16/17/18 when these records came out and heard them in their original context....." Daydream Nation will always be my least favourite of this period because coming after 3 highly innovative and disparate albums it sounded like a compromise to my ears, and I was really disappointed... I just didn't think that it brought anything new to the table.(apart from Providence and maybe Eliminator Jr.)... it's interesting to look back on it now a decade and a half later... and of course I went on to love the album. It is a true testament to this amazing band that I'm still interested and excited when I listen to their records... and I still look forward to their next move with relish...

The results are preliminary, but only three votes for DDN (2 1/3 really). Of course it's a good record (I always skip Rain King, tho'), but it IS slightly overrated. And by the way, why does every article on the album have to mention 2nd place in the Villiage Voice Pazz and whatever poll? Did this really made history? Everyone says it their masterpiece (as if they only have one); I mean, it's common logic, like Washing Machine implies at the start of the thread, right? But then you ask the real fans what they really think, and a different answer emerges. Interesting...
SISTER, btw. |
