I love both the self-titled and Yank Crime. My friend got me into them about 10 years ago. It blew my mind. awesome angular freakouts.

Drive like Jehu and Hot Snakes I love equally. I was just listening to "Yank Crime" on my iphone at the gym yesterday.

Great band, their live videos on youtube are fucking brilliant too. So much energy. Really wish I could've seen them.

I like the self-titled marginally more than Yank Crime.

I used to be a really big fan of Jehu. I think their sound in general was more influential to me than their actual music was. I was still young when Yank Crime cane out, but when I heard it 1997 or so, it sounded like the perfect example lf what I wanted music to sound like. They helped me track down some of the bands I loved most in high school, and helped me appreciate the influence of Fugazi and Slint even more.

I don't really have that Jehu mentality anymore, and on retrospect I realize that they were only one of many bands sporting that geometric, angular post-punk sound at the time. Now they sound a bit boring to me, but I don't think I will ever forget them for showing me that punk was not for dyed haired kids alone.

"Do You Compute" is still probably one of my favorite songs of all time; but they kicked some ass, and kicked it hard. I never did see them play live. I saw Hot Snakes, who I've never really gotten into, but I regret not seeing then during their prime.

Oh, and they also helped me discover some truly great bands from in and around San Diego. Namely, Black Heart Procession and Three Mile Pilot, who remain fixtures in my stereos and mobiles to this day. Rocket From the Crypt's pretty god damn noteworthy as well.

has any of the other work from reis or froberg come close to this in terms of the sound and structure? Ive heard hot snakes, some obits, and a few songs from rocket and it seems like nothing they did came close to jehu. But again, I havent heard all of the shit thy put out after jehu.

I think Rocket from the Crypt and Hot Snakes have some definite similarities in sound and tone, but neither really captures the Jehu vibe. You should look into A Minor Forest though if you want something comparable (though less unique) from roughly the same time and place.

Hell, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if you really liked Three Mile Pilot and Black Heart Procession. They're both proggy and totally different in sound, but I know very few people who don't like the whole lot of these bands.

Let's not talk about Pinback though.

Thanks for this thread. I'm listening to Yank Crime like crazy, because of this thread. Cheers.

I was initially thinking, wait, I don't know any of those bands severian is talking about, then I realized, no, I do, and I recall I don't like any of them! No disrespect, I like that folks like music I don't like, I'm not a snob about it.

looks like a one off reunion show is happening in whale's vagina, ca. intriguingly it came up because they wanted to play some legendary pipe organ at the site of concert, balboa park. i really wish i could go but it looks like they are going to document it. i would love to see these dudes live!

Drive Like Jehu just reunited for a 5-song set in San Diego. Guess it was kind of a one time deal unfortunately. You never know though

Yeah, I know! Can you believe it?! Neither can I! What if they reunited for a tour? That would be so OMG.

Honestly though, this got me pretty stoked, even if it was an isolated incident. And it occurred to me that what has caused a lot of reunion projects to become long-lasting tours or a full- on return to the studio has been unexpectedly high levels of internet fan feedback, letting the artist know that people remember them and that they're more important now than they were during their first run.

Just a thought. Not saying you have to flood Jehu's twitter accounts and mailboxes with desperate pleas for them to return... But I'm certainly not saying you can't do those things.
