hey!
a couple of times a year my favourite band Low will perform some special Christmas shows. For some reason it's always in December. So just out of curiosity I checked the air rates yesterday for a trip from Amsterdam to New York in early December: it's only $199 via Icelandair! So now I'm really hard thinking about seeing Low twice next month. I just can't wait until February (Brugge (Belgium) and hopefully more dates will come), and I don't think they will ever do one of their Christmas shows somewhere here. So can anyone on this board give me some tips? I've never been to the Eastcoast, apart from the New York airport, so I'm pretty much clueless here. So I'll need still: - a cheap place to stay. How cheap/expensive is a week in New York? - other things to do while I'm there - some other tips perhaps that I'm now not thinking about - how's the weather in early december There's only limited availability on these flights still, so I have to hurry if I want to book. I'll probably fly in on November 30 and return on December 8. I'll have to be home by the 10th since I already have tickets to see Sonic Youth on the 12th :-) thanks! jan-willem P.S.: Low plays at the Bowery Ballroom, on December 5 and 6.

There is a hotel very close to Bowery Ballroom called the Pioneer Hotel. Despite it's cheapness and closeness to the venue where the shows will be, DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO STAY THERE. Unless you like tiny rooms with blood on the walls, of course.
The other places I've stayed in NYC have been nearer the Empire State, which may not be the right sort of location for your needs, but if you think that sort of area would be suitable for you, the Herald Square Hotel was reasonably priced, comfortable, and clean. I've also read good things about the Washington Square Hotel, and that's probably in a more suitable location. (Actually, I'm thinking of going to NY for my 40th birthday next year, and Washington Square Hotel is looking like a good candidate for where I'll stay) |

there are hostels that will be cheap at this time of year. check hostelworld.com for more info.
the weather will be quite cold so take lots of warm clothes and in new york there is always plenty to do.

My friend from Mnpls always stays at the White House hotel on 3rd Ave (Bowery)...its very cheap and clean and bare bones, about $30 a night. Other than a hostel, you're paying $100 a night. There's a Howard Johnson's on East Houston St., I expect that's about $150 a night.
