They co-exist harmoniously in my music collection.

Ok, so Radiohead fans say SY is more influential. The answer would most definitely differ depending on what message board you are asking on.

I don't 'love' either group. I can listen to a lot more pixies stuff but the Sonic Youth stuff I like I like a lot more than the pixies.

Yeah, both bands are great. They have great songs, great musicians, they are both highly influential on the music scene and both bands have created amazing music. But Sonic Youth have been around longer, and have had more time to perfect their craft. Also, SY have a more experimental and radical sound. So in a pinch, SY takes the cake. But the Pixies are damn good in their own rite. They deserve the respect and admiration of the people on this board.

in between sonic youth and pixies everything - indie music / the alternative expansion into the mainstream - happened.. the *complement* each other, and i don't think they have ever *competed* in any way..
i am a gemini, thet would mean i have two distinct personalities, and sometimes i feel pixies are a simple pop band (that's supposed to bad) and other times i feel sonic youth are a simple noise band (that's supposed to be bad too.) it evens out in the long run.. i have been an active listener and a quiet fan of both groups for nearly 18 years now.. my favorite mixtapes have multiple songs from each band.. i have made homemade t-shirts for each band.. one distinction though, i got the chance to see sonic youth perform live, (yeah yeah.. i was the first in line.. et cetera) but pixies i've never experienced with such intensity.. |

Not to be an ass, but just because people like SY more than the Pixies doesn't necessarily mean SY is more influential than the Pixies. (I like SY better too by the way.)
The influence thing is really hard to judge, and it all depends on what you define as being influential. If you measure it by which band has had a more long lasting influence on "mainstream" music, I think you have to give it to the Pixies. On the other hand, if you measure it by lasting musical legacy, and what the artists have contributed to music, I think it goes to Sonic Youth. |

Sucks for you. They put on a great show when I saw them. They were a well-oiled pop machine, chugging through 30 great songs with hardly a break in between. Good times.

Ditto. I got to see them twice and they fucking rocked Amherst and Boston. Unbelievable shows. Two of the best concerts I have EVER been to.

yes!!! let's stop listening to music and start discussing how much they are overrated/underrated or better in a complete subjective plain.
the real question is, do you really give a shit? |

They rocked the FUCK out of Pittsburgh. They honestly stood up to Sonic Youth and Gang of Four live. There are some things I like better about the Pixies and somethings I like about Sonic Youth. Frank Black is an incredible songwriter and singer, and the Pixies have a really great feel. Joey Santiago's guitar playing is really great at shading their songs, as Jimmy Page would say. The Pixies can take a simple chord progression, and through just use of dynamics can make a song sound MAMMOTH (that is my new word for anything that sounds big) Sonic Youth are great at sculpting and using both dissonance and consonance to their advantage and putting it in a rock setting. There is a classical sensibility to their songs just as much as their is an avant garde sensibility. It isn't about sheer noise to Sonic Youth, they take full advantage of its capability to be molded into a movement that ends in consonance and catharsis. |
