First off, I don't mean to come off as a vinyl snob. I think CDs are perfectly fine. My preference is for vinyl, partly because I like the larger format for the artwork, and partly because it's what I grew up collecting. I've tried to collect most of my Sonic Youth copies on vinyl, although sometimes that's been nearly impossible--since I didn't really get into them until around 1990, I haven't been able to find everything from the early years on vinyl.
What's your preference? |

I have a few things on both CD and vinyl--the Goo Deluxe LP set and the original Goo CD release; A Thousand Leaves; and the recent Sonic Youth EP reissue. What happened with the last two was I worried about having to wait too long to find it on LP or that it will never come out on vinyl, going ahead and buying it on CD and then three weeks later or so, seeing the LP in the store and getting that, too.
I was patient about The Whitey Album, though, and held out for a good three weeks or so before the vinyl finally showed up in the stores. But if I saw both CD and LP in the store, I'd go with the LP vice the CD. I have Murray Street, Sonic Nurse, and EVOL on LP as well. The packaging and vinyl on the recent things is pretty awesome. Fairly heavy vinyl, nicely published covers. |

I buy most of the SY on vinyl. I do have 3 or 4 albums on cassette and BMR, CIN, DDN, EVOL, SISTER, SFOSL, MS, and Nurse on CD though

Have three SYR things on vinyl, too. Kinda cool to hit the 45rpm button for SYR1-Anagrama.

i have the deluxe ep on vinyl. it's one of those albums that doesn't seem "right" on cd, and plus, i bought it just a few days after it came out on kungfunation and all they had was vinyl.

I have nearly all the pre-DGC releases on vinyl i made a point to get those starting about 5 or so years ago, w/ some special finds; a test pressing of the SST version of 'confusion is sex', the 1st s/t ep on the Zensor label (i believe the german subsidary label to nuetral during the early 80's), bad moon rising (Blast First), EVOL (SST), Sister (SST), master-dik ep (SST), Daydream Nation 2LP (Blast First)... still wanting to get that kill yr idols 12" ep...

i once saw the kill yr idols 12" in a UK record store... it was only £10... why i didn't buy it still haunts me to this day... I have everything on CD and then there are a few things I have re-bought on vinyl... I plan to get some more vinyl although I am doing this gradually as I prefer to spend money on records I haven't heard before! my vinyl SY collection:
Sonic Youth EP EVOL Death Valley 69 12" Sister (uncensored cover) Washing Machine A Thousand Leaves NYC Ghost and Flowers Sonic Nurse Master Dik Sunday 7" Helen Lundeberg/Eyeliner 7" Mirror/Dash 7" I'm gonna take some pics and post them... CHout, that collection is indeed a thing of rare beauty... |
