On April 15, Touch and Go will reissue Slint's classic 1991 album Spiderland as a deluxe box set. It's been remastered from the original analog masters by Bob Weston and will include 14 previously unreleased outtakes and demos. The album, outtakes, and demos are all being pressed on 180 gram vinyl, and the box also comes with CDs of all the music. It also includes a 104-page book with never-before-seen photos, lyrics, and a foreword by Will Oldham. It's available in a limited edition of 3,138 copies. The box set also contains Breadcrumb Trail, a 90-minute documentary on DVD about the making of Spiderland directed by Lance Bangs. The film includes interviews with the band, plus James Murphy, Steve Albini, David Yow, Ian MacKaye, Matt Sweeney, and others. If you pre-order the box before March 8, you'll get a T-shirt made from the silk screen the band used to make their 1989 tour shirt. A limited number of box sets will be signed by the entire band. Watch a video outlining the contents of the box set below, after the tracklist. Spiderland (Remastered) Box Set: A1 Breadcrumb Trail (Remastered) A2 Nosferatu Man (Remastered) A3 Don, Aman (Remastered) B1 Washer (Remastered) B2 For Dinner... Does anyone else HATE box sets?
I don't even want to see the documentary. The first time I heard Spiderland I thought it was made by 4 psychotic recluses who promptly left the music scene after recording it. When I found out they were 4 goofy kids in the KY post-hardcore scene and David Pajo played in 1000000 other bands, part of the mystique was lost. Still a great record, but nothing can recreate my first experience listening to Spiderland. I was pretty frightened (this rarely happens even when I'm listening to supposedly "scary" music).

I like box sets if they are truly box sets, as in a complete collection of a band's output. These re-issues are pure money grabs from record companies who know that everyone that love those 80's and 90's bands now are getting older and have good jobs and are willing to pay $150 to recapture old nostalgia.

me too. I don't even like re-releases. I'd rather just get a stand-alone release of the bonus stuff than to have to re-buy an album I already have in "deluxe" format.

The only reason they probably charge so much for these sort of box sets is because whomever makes them is running out of legendary bands to make some money on and the average fan of indie music stops at bands like Pavement or Slint when it comes to adulate a band that did it in their own terms or is normally perceived as such.

Of course I feel like an asshole for this now that everyone's weighed in, but I decided I was buying it before I finished reading the title of this thread.

Buy away. There is nothing wrong with that. It's just hard to see the worth of paying so much. I could get 10-15 new records for $150.00

It does seem a bit out of character. Especially for a Touch&Go band that has not been active, aside from the obligatory reunion tour, in 20 years
I mean, it's fucking Slint. They should just remaster both albums and the EP, release them tastefully, for Dischord prices, and not expose themselves any more than necessary. If they want to release some shit, they should try popping out a few live albums. Nice, tastefully packaged, live recordings with minimal artwork and minimal presentation to preserve the iconic "What?"-ness of the band. But to do something this unnecessarily over the top is to completely throw away all the mystery and weirdness that has surrounded the album and the band since the damn thing came out and busted everyone's teeth. The idea of all the members jointly signing copies of albums, and t-shirts made from the silk that Dave Pajo spins out of his asshole... well, it all sounds kinda... ahm... kinda Flaming Lipsey to me. (no offense, Jesus) Maybe I won't buy it. I think there are some $500 bags of Wayne coyne shaped gummy bears that vibrate frequencies into your head for the duration of the time you chew them (such that every bag amounts to one song) that I haven't broken the bank and taken a job as a shift manager at a MacDonald's for yet. |

I just listened to the demos and outtakes and some of them are quite disappointing. Todd's and Brian's Songs especially.
But I'll be still looking forward to seeing them live

A documentary about them called Breadcrumb Trail (2014) is making the rounds.

The remastered version will apparently also get a 'regular' release : http://store.touchandgorecords.com/p...and-remastered
The box sold out fast, despite the high cost. Only regret is that the demos & outtakes will only be digitally available, not on vinyl ... and that it won't be released 'till the end of June. Maybe they'll sell them on their European tour. Is anyone going to see them? I'm still kinda hesitating ... |

I'm possibly going to see them in Antwerpen, but may not do that to save my ears for the festival that will be on the next weekend which will be indoors, and loud
