if only for James Joyce, Flannery O'Conner, and "black Irish" women, I have a lot of love for the Irish!

my feelings have always been mixed about this holiday, the US makes it kinda unbearable to wear green and do anything without feeling like a complete tool, that and I have never been the bar crawl type
i suppose i shall spend it in the traditional Irish manor, wallowing in self pity at home with a bottle of Jameson in arms reach |

i dont drink and dont care about this.
saint padraig was actually romano-british and kidnapped by pirates then brought over here as a slave. now that i live in england i have become another type of minority all over again lol they are often a bit racist to me but dont see it as such, they would never say the kind of things i get to black people. i am assumed to be a workshy hedonist alcoholic. i am not northern irish here - i am irish irish - im a leprachaun |

i fucking hate alcohol. im happy to be 'that guy' that ruins everyones fun.
some people are nicer than others about it. some people hate me for it. some have sneered in my face and threatened to beat me up - id spoil all your 'fun' if i could. a synthetic version of it that gives no hangovers is gonna be available soon and hopefully the real thing will fall out of use into history eventually. i say this as someone who although sober will always be statistically in the highest percentile of biggest consumers of intoxicants, both legal and illegal. fugazi was right all along. when you see people being destroyed in slow motion by that drug - we're all destroyed in slow motion by entropy and life but alcohol is a special kind of evil. i hate it because its stupifying. rather be miserable at full cognitive power than miserable while drunk. i cannot trust myself on alcohol. |

it's cool if you don't like alcohol, but what does that have to do with ruining other people's fun? can't you get along without drink? or do you feel the need to torment them? Quote:
people hate you for not drinking? fucking fascists. Quote:
dude, you need better friends. sounds all very adolescent. Quote:
the problem with your futurisms is that you won't be alive to see them-- food from a vat, alcohol that doesn't hurt, 3d printers that make everything, etc-- it's like a science-fiction version of the heavenly afterlife. what are you doing tomorrow and the next month? Quote:
i'm a pretty moderate user save for a few times a year when i get absolutely shitfaced and have the greatest fun-- but with like all mind-altering experiences, it's all about set & setting. meaning, basically, good people around. Quote:

ive learned that other people dont actually respect an individuals right to sobriety no matter how badly theyve been addicted in the past. not ruining peoples fun is code for shutting up and consuming what youre told or letting the whole sick process ruin more lives without daring to question it. those people that can drink and not become addicted or get to a state where they start saying and doing things they regret should be able to drink civilly and stfu about it but of course they cant. so i wont respect this 'enjoyment' that is supposedly the sole purpose of our lives (i never agreed to that). my futurisms are all already existing or imminently existing, they're already making that synthetic alcohol substitute but havent released it yet. |

^^ yeah i don't have the same cultural experience with alcohol
in my 3rd world hovel when i was a kid, yeah, "drink, motherfucker" was definitely a command-- a lot of social pressure and if you don't drink you're a pussy, etc--so i am not denying that this exists. but here in 'merica honestly i know a lot of people who won't drink, or will have only one drink or two, and have no problem integrating with everybody else. someone comes to my house and don't want alcohol i offer tea or coffee or lemonade or whatever. if anything, it's the habitual drunks that have a hard time fitting in after their early 20s. teh world of grownups is definitely NOT a frat paty. |

Yeah, let's have a holiday that reinforces stereotypes.

This was always the stupidest "holiday" to me, coming over to US from Puerto Rico when I was 8 years old.
Columbus Day was a de facto Italian holiday but no one gives a shit about it anymore. At least in the southern and southwestern US the gringos treat Cinco de Mayo like it means something. It is like the most minor of civic holidays in Mexico. Yet, every day in USA is let's suck the refined shits out of England's asshole day. Not a single news cyce goes by without some stupid bullshit attempting to keep the UK's wheelings and dealings relevant. Lately it has been that Prince William's wife has bought clothes that match her huge aristocratic Sapphire ring.. wow. england rules.... It is all bullshit. holidays in USA make no fucking sense. Any small group that raises a big enough stink will get a "holiday" for them, soon to be forgotten. Martin Luther King Jr Day is not even observed by much of business. In Texas there is Juneteenth, the anniversary of the freeing of Texas slaves, but it is treated like a joke by the white media, and that ridicule keeps many black folks from truly commemorating it. In NYC there is a Puerto Rican Day parade, and every single year, the media discusses how some people got drunk, some got violent, and that ladies were showing their thick thighs and asses, painting all revelers with the same dirty brush. fuck that shit. The holidays that should actually matter to America, Thanksgiving and the 4th of July for example, are treated like another day to prepare for big sales, big $$$ to spend! I hate all that shit. rant over

the Irish used to be seen as a malignant group of dirty uneducated worthless immigrants. St. Patrick's Day was used as a community pride builder, but it has been quite a while since the Irish as a whole were seen as a separate race to demean. ZMost people seem to lump in Irish with "white folks" in general.
There are still many who do not see Italians as "white" though. The current wave of Latino immigrants are from over 3 dozen different nations, with irreconcilable differences in culture. I wonder how the priviledged class will eventually assimilate them?

Most of Asia follows that dictum. EVERYONE must drink if offered, and you must keep drinking as long as someone is pouring. The same goes for Russia, and many Latin American countries. I would be fucked. Even in USA I get disbelief and ridicule when I tell people that do not know me that I am allergic to alcohol. It seems that the phrase "allergic to alcohol" is one used by recovered/recovering alcoholics as a throwaway little joke. In my case it is real. I have felt many times the deep lack of trust and respect when one does not drink when offered. I say fuck them sheep. I don't judge them when they pass on the fat bowl of Diesel bud I hand them.
