Well that's a lotta brackets LOOK the point is I wanted to take stock of which artists Sonic Youth and then the now former members have covered, and which ones you would have liked SY to cover and would now want Kim, Lee, T & Steve to. Let's start by listing what's been done (this is most likely gonna be incomplete and some Sonic Smartasses are gonna come up with obscure shit, for which they're already welcome):
The Stooges Crime Ramones Black Flag (if this is true) Kim Fowley The Neon Boys The Beach Boys The Untouchables Alice Cooper New York Dolls Neil Young The Beatles The Fall Captain Beefheart Madonna Robert Palmer Nirvana Mudhoney Jay Reatard Beck Bob Dylan Minutemen Saccharine Trust Shonen Knife Plastic Bertrand Blue Öyster Cult The Carpenters The Rolling Stones Martin Mull Danny Elfman (The Simpsons theme) John Lennon David Bowie (with David) Wolff, Cage, Cardew, Ono, Reich, Oliveros et al The Byrds The Monkees Sandy Denny Joni Mitchell Tim Rogers The Modern Lovers The Gun Club Wire The Velvet Underground The Grateful Dead The B-52's (almost!) The Germs Patty Waters Nina Simone

My first vote for what I would've loved Sonic Youth to cover: Roxy Music. "For Your Pleasure" — that extended instrumental final section, Sonic-ized, woulda been sheer (and scary) bliss through the speakers...

Can you put Sandy Denny song they covered? Really like to hear that.
I think they could have covered 13th Floor Elevators & Red Krayola easily. |

In this case I was referring to Lee's cover of "Bushes And Briars". Quote:
Agreed! In other news, I failed to include Serge Gainsbourg on the list. My subconscious must have blocked it because I don't like the sleazy fucker.

SYR 4 could have used some Harry Partch or Iannis Xenakis...

"Pyromaniac" or virtually any other early Verlaines song would have been a GREAT choice. As for post-SY, I'd like Kim to cover The Raincoats' "The Void" in an abstract, fucked-up way.

A few additions from a Sonic Smartass And also, a few I'm wondering about.
Could you give some details on these: The Byrds, The B-52's, Patty Waters, Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, Tim Rogers, The Modern Lovers. Here's my contribution: Beat Happening (Thurston, Kim, and Epic Soundtracks on "Fortune Cookie Prize") Burt Bacharach (Thurston with Jim O'Rourke on "All Kinds of People Love Burt Bacharach") Fleetwood Mac (Lee, Steve, and J Mascis on "Just Tell Me That You Want Me") Guided by Voices (Thurston & Steve in Male Slut on "Blatant Doom Trip") The Hanatarash (Lee on "Snake is Long...") Haruomi Hosono (Thurston on "Strange Songbook") Jandek (Thurston in Dapper on "Naked in the Afternoon") John Cage (Thurston on "45'18") John Fahey (Lee on "I Am the Ressurection") Michael Chapman (Thurston on "Oh Michael, Look What You've Done") The New Blockaders (Thurston on "Viva Negativa!", not sure if this really is a cover or some other form of tribute) Pearls Before Swine (Thurston & Mike Watt on "For the Dead in Space") Shirley & Dolly Collins (Lee on "Shirley Inspired...") Stick Men with Ray Guns (Thurston & Steve on Dim Stars EP) Suicide (Thurston with White Flag on "An Invitation to Suicide") Sun Ra (Thurston with Ezra La Plante on "Wavelength Infinity") The Wipers (Thurston & Keith Nealy on "Fourteen Songs for Greg Sage and the Wipers") X-Ray Spex (Kim in Free Kitten on 7") Quote:

Bitchen contribution, thank you. I knew I was missing shit! The Byrds — Lee covered "Everybody's Been Burned" live. The B-52's — Thurston played the intro to "Rock Lobster" live, then said, "What was that...? That's 'Rock Lobster'..." Patty Waters — Body/Head's "Black" is their take on "Black Is the Colour (Of My True Love's Hair)", inspired by Waters' unsurpassable version on Patty Waters Sings. Nina Simone — Again, Body/Head's "Aint" is their take on "Ain't Got No, I Got Life". Joni Mitchell — Lee has recently covered "The Circle Game" (although not complete, more like a coda to "Ambulancer") live. Tim Rogers — 2013 split single: Lee covers "Jammie's Got A Gal" and Rogers does "Stranded" on the flip. The Modern Lovers — Lee has covered "She Cracked" live.

I'm thinking now that this would sound better as a Thurston Moore Band cover than as a Sonic Youth one. So T, if you're out there, you love it, I love it, cover it. DO IT.

I know, right? Now, when I started it I thought it was gonna take off like a North Korean ICBM, but then it dropped dead... like a North Korean ICBM. Our fellow Sonic Lifers here have demonstrated a lamentable lack of imagination. Anyway, I'm here to add the Bush Tetras' "Too Many Creeps"... and anything by Liquid Liquid — that would have been FABULOUS!

Here's a few they SHOULD have done:
Anything off of Lou Reed's "Berlin" "Cortez the Killer" Neil Young "Brassneck" the Wedding Present |

Kind of a pipe dream of mine of mine to hear SY renditions of "Marquee Moon" and "Good Morning Captain." Wish they'd have at least covered a television track. Maybe "Elevation" would have been better suited to them. Or "See No Evil" ... that would have been nice as an EVOL era bonus track.

Television songs, not necessarily "Marquee Moon" but the shorter ones, would have been a shoo-in for the Rather Ripped era. The "clean" guitar lines + raveup on "Incinerate", for example, are pure Verlaine & Lloyd. Now I wish they had covered Buzzcocks' "Oh Shit". It can still happen if Thurston gets into thrashing mode, I believe...
