I remember it was on TV when I was 11. And even back then I scratched my head whenever I saw it and said " Why the hell is William S. Burroughs in a Shoe commercial??
I remember during it Burroughs recited his poem about " The basic unit in technology is not the bit. The basic unit is " you " |

Yes, I knew who he was and I had read all of his books and I loved them all and I was a total intellectual as a kid, and I'm better than you cause I got into him at an early age. What do you think?
Of course I didn't but I knew his name and his face, and that he was an author. And yes i do remember I was exactly 11 when the commercial aired because I was taking an extra curiccular however you spell it, school activity at a community college and I was around college students alot, so I " KNEW " who WSB was per say, and that he was a famous novelist. That's why I said it made me wonder why he was in a commercial for shoes. It was ALSO the year Beastie Boys ILL Communications came out which was 1994, and that means I was ............ guess how old, ELEVEN Thanks for your accusations and your insults though. They're appreciated. Isn't that what they call being a " Troll? " |

On the subject of Mr. Burroughs, has anyone ever heard The Saint They Called Him, the project with Kurt Cobain. I can't find it anywhere. I was just curious. Oh shit, i hope i'm not getting this wrong.

priest not saint, umjammer atomsk...a mistake anyone could make. & golden child of all people has no business correcting anyone's spelling but i still see he has a napoleonic penchant to be a smart ass whenver the opportunity presents itself. After all he's the same dude that recently said Hussein "killed millions"; I suppose he was getting his wires crossed with Hitler.
yeah, to answer your question (& that's all this topic requires is a 'yes' or no' answer really with a small comment & not all this bullshit) i remember the commercial...i was thinking at the time that bill must be low on fundage. i'll take the word that the commercial was shown in'94. i guess khchris also didn't consider that this fact also could have been googled beforehand & thus, EyeballGrowth would have been able to determine how old he was when the spot aired simply just by that. Oh & khchris is still on my ignore list, but his post was reproduced as a quote above. |

and no I didn't google it. I remember the damn commercial word for word. I was a huge couch potato back then and it really sticks out in my memory. Burroughs says " The basic unit in technology is not the bit. The basic unit is YOU. A shoe that glistens in the moonlight. The basic unit in technology is not the bit... but the BODY " His face is shown on a TV screen in a store window, and there are shots of an athlete jogging through alley ways. And there's a harmonica playing in the background.
I just checked google, and the commercial does not exist on the internet. I know you were just giving me a hard time, I'm just saying the reason I remember is because I have a very good memory. I can recite like, whole commercials and tv show openings from back then, it scares me. |

i mentioned that as far as khchris knew you could have googled for it possibly. at that point in the thread, you hadn't yet replied back to him. Nor was i implying that i thought that you googled it & were lying or embellishing the truth. i did figure that i would be misunderstood as soon as i wrote my reply though. people are so damn predictable it makes this board boring for me. & this board is so damn stagnant. i come back to the computer every hour or two & there's hardly ever anything going on here worth a damn.

I wouldn't say that. While his cut-up novels aren't for everyone, he is a very intelligent man, even if it doesn't show in some of his novels. I enjoy reading interviews with him more than I do his actual work. However, I believe Junky to be one of the best, if not the best, books on heroin addiction.
