I got a decent ticket, someone just walked up and asked if I needed one...I waited cuz I wasn't sure if I could afford to go...I borrowed money from my friend and now I'm way broker, but I'm glad I went.
I get torn when bands change their songs though, they have always had some excellent improv sections live, but I've always been bugged when bands change the keys of their songs drastically (i have a pretty decent sense of pitch, that type of thing doesn't seem to bug most people but it does me) and The Police (or I should say Sting) will change the keys of their songs way lower probably so he doesn't have to strain his voice as much, but the songs just don't have the same urgency to me. They were good, considering how old they are...a bit less energy than lots of the shows I've heard from their prime, but probably my only chance to ever see them. Not bad for 50 and 60 year olds. |

I just also gotta state the obvious: I hate arena shows in general...I'm so used to seeing bands that are closer than a block away from me. I rarely go to huge shows like this...it really is hard to feel a part of it.
Not to mention being surrounded by casual fans, they only stand or show excitement for the big hit songs... |

I was drawn in by the fact that they are all excellent musicians...Stings bass playing is an influence since he takes the minimal route alot at it works so well to leave space - his playing was some of the first that made me realize not all basslines have to be busy to be effective. Andy Summers' had some pretty out there sounds/playing considering the band was pretty mainstream, a huge influence on my love of effects, and Stewart is obviously an awesome drummer.
Sting was a twat and still is, but he wrote some incredible songs back then. Each album of theirs definitley has filler, but also has some amazing non-single songs that are just as good as the singles. |

LIke U2, The Police were another band I was ostracized for liking when I was in high school. I saw them twice in 83 in Portland Me at the CCCC and then at Foxboro Stadium with Flock of Seagulls and the Fixx (I really dug that Reach the Beach album at the time). There's a lot more to that story I won't be posting on the internothing. I don't care much for them now, though.
Andy Summers is a cool mofo, regardless, he fuggin saw Jimi Hendrix at his first gig in London. |
