Shame that I, Ludicrous' Preposterous Tales isn't in the top ten! So it's The Fall again, Hit THe North.

I'm not really a New Order fan, but I do love True Faith.

Has to be Sugarcubes for me. I was never a huge fan, but that song is great. That Petrol Emotion would come a close second.

I had a That Petrol Emotion tape when I was in high school. I can't even remember the name of it.

That's pretty awful when out of that pathetic top 10 "Birthday" by Sugarcubes should, in fact, be number one.

there's no songs here from R.E.M. - Document here at all, nothing from Huevos by Meat Puppets, nothing from Camper Van Beethoven Vampire Can Mating Oven, nothing from Warren Zevon Sentimental Hygiene, nothing from Sonny Sharrock Seize the Rainbow, nothing from Black Flag Who’s Got the 10½, nothing from Waits Frank's Wild Years, nothing from The Joshua Tree, nothing from Springsteen's Tunnel of Love...there's not even one from The Cult - Electric (you would think that would be sucky enough to place amongst some of these picks)
I omitted the ones I wouldn't concern myself with in a list like this...

what i've chosen to leave behind are all good songs to some degree. as for the rest...the ones I omitted...who fucking cares?...they belong to the fucking dustbin.

1. Sugarcubes - Birthday

7. New Order - True Faith

12. Smiths - Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before
13. Sonic Youth - Schizophrenia
14. Public Enemy - Rebel Without a Pause
15. Smiths - Girlfriend in a Coma
16. Jesus and Mary Chain - April Skies

18. Big Black - Colombian Necktie

24. Smiths - Half a Person
25. Smiths - Death of a Disco Dancer
26. The Fall - Athlete Cured

32. Prince - Sign o' the Times (there's at least 5 songs on that double album better than the title track, but whatever)

34. Smiths - Sheila Take a Bow

36. Eric B & Rakim - I Know You Got Soul
(this is a good song, but would it ever make it into a top 50 songs of 1987 that I would choose? No fucking way. It might ... might make the top 100, but I severely doubt it.)

37. Sonic Youth - (I got a) Catholic Block
38. Public Enemy - You're Gonna Get Yours
39. Jesus and Mary Chain - Kill Surf City
(this is the best fucking song JAMC ever did)

42. Big Black - L Dopa (way down here at number 42?)
43. New Order - 1963
44. Butthole Surfers - 22 Going On 23 (nice choice, but what About Bong Song? The Colored FBI guy?
Kuntz?
What about Graveyard!!!!!!!!!!?????????
In short, the list sucks.
"Festive" my ass; it's outright depressing in its mediocrity.
45. Smiths - Shoplifters of the World Unite (this is piss poor that this is at number 45...it should be in the top 10 second only to tracks off of Sister)

Ok, Breaking Hands was the single from the Gun Club's Mother Juno, but seriously, that's not the best track on the album, what about Araby, Thunderhead or Port Of Souls?

I love Louder Than Bombs.

"Festive" my ass; there's nothing festive about this list at all.

it's outright depressing in its mediocrity.

Fucking Shoplifters at number 45...outrageous.

Well, at least Sonic Youth got thrown a decent fucking bone with two selections.

What's even more depressing is that the top 50 songs of 1987 according to some American radio show back in the day would be far, far,
far
worse.

Each person voted for their top three of the year, and the spirit of the thing was that the tracks should be ones that had been played on Peel's show.

I like John Peel. He was responsible for bringing a lot of great bands in for sessions. He had a great radio voice, was personable, was knowledgeable, & helped fledgling bands in the beginning such as T. Rex (until Marc Bolan fucked him over by snubbing him). He also had the O Superman b/w Walk The Dog single in his record box.

I'll never understand why he was some The White Stripes groupie towards the end though. How he could equate them with some of his beloved garage bands is beyond me. And just like any other DJ, he too played his fair share of total crap on the air. The only thing is, John Peel supposedly had total control over what he played. In my mind, that only makes the subpar stuff he played that much more of an offence. There's ample enough great music out there to never have to play anything that's borderline. The ugly truth at the bottom line is that he loved his show more than he loved music.

I think it was Manic Pop Thrill, their first. They were criminally neglected and as you say, forgotten now. I loved Chemicrazy, which I think was their last.

Steve Mack had a fantastic voice, I wonder what he's doing now.

Wasn't it around this time that Peel started thinking about abandoning the whole festive fifty idea altogether, accusing his audience (quite rightly) of being just as conservative (in its own way) as listeners of 'mainstream' radio. Certainly when The Wedding Present get to occupy 4 of the top ten slots, while Public Enemy's Rebel Without a Pause only makes number 14, it becomes clear that we're dealing with utter morons.

The more I think about this, the more I think you're right. I had this as the B Side to the April Skies 12" and for most of the year it remained welded to my turntable.

I'm not at all surprised that no songs from The Joshua Tree made the fifty. Peel fans were a deluded bunch who thought that rejecting the likes of U2 while standing behind Cud offered some kind of statement.

Clearly The Cure never released a record that year. It was official FF policy that no Cure song was allowed to be released without appearing in its top ten.
