You know, bands who want to make some form of impact other than hitting a drum, or strumming strings, or singing somewhat useless words. I like it when I hear that bands support a cause other than their own bank-accounts. Incubus come to mind with their Make Yourself Foundation (http://makeyourselffoundation.org/), and I know of some other bands/artists who support other causes or like Brett Whiteleys mother who started the art scholarship (http://www.brettwhiteley.org/)

What other bands, artists do this?

Ps - Yeah, not another thread about punk rock... or maybe it is if youwant to get philisophical...

Bono, Sting, Coldplay. The list is endless. Unfortunately.

Yeah, we all know Bono does.

Why does it matter?

Bono is charitable but I can't stand him anyways.

R.E.M. do it well without coming off as douches. Radiohead let it into their music quite a bit but at least they're cryptic enough to not destroy the mood.

What is the connection between bands and good causes? I don't care if a band I like is doing something for the good of the earth anymore than I do when somebody of zero celebrity status does; not saying I don't care at all, just that it being a band doing it doesn't make it anymore worthwhile.

there are a lot of rappers who have done community/charity type stuff, the other day i was reading about something Fat Joe did, i've got a thing somewhere that has a list of rappers who've started foundations and the like.

someone whose music I hate but is good John Butler. He runs a grants program from his own money for musicians to record. I think he gives something like $80k au annually.

Here here. I love Eddie Vedder on paper for all the wonderful things he does for humanity, but it doesn't make his yarling any more bearable. Doing meaningful things is great, but it's sad that celebrities are needed to wake people up in the first place.

You're missing the point.

Musicians (or celebs as you want to put it) receive an abundance of money for standing on a stage and playing a few tunes, or reciting a few lines on film. When you really consider what they do, it's not really that important yet they get paid immense proportions of money for doing so. Therefore why not try and make their existences more meaningful and put some of that cash into play and try and make a difference considering they're in the position financially to do so, rather than buy bigger houses and faster cars. Someone with 'zero status' is rarely in the position financially to make as big of an impact as a 'celebrity'.
Of course, if a band doesn't care about anything then they don't care about anything, but like I said I (not you) like it when people do something for others rather than being self-absorbed pricks. Hence the thread.

don't be fooled... only a small number of musicians make an abundant amount of money, its those musicians that have achieved some sort of celebrity status through popularity and making Top 40 Mainstream hits, these types of people are in the limelight nearly all the time and are heavily scrutinized for their actions and also their non-actions so these are the types of people who hire 'PR' people for themselves to help them look better by donating money to some sort of "good cause", some musicians have good intentions and personally get involved but keep in mind their are a number of big time musicians and celebrities that hire someone to oversee a certain amount of finances to be used as donations because these people don't have the time or really the care to deal with it, but they care about their status as being a "good person"... with that said, to me the whole big business of the celebrity musician and the such is all BULLSHIT.

Scott V, on the contrary, don't fool yourself. With all that you just said, I'm surprised you're not running around screaming "They're coming for me".

I don't want your account deleted, or to put you on ignore. I would, though, suggest enrolling in the 1st grade again.
