it's actually not that bad. definitely a grower. i like it because I want 21st breeders, not 90s breeders.

Haha, "not that bad".
... Well, we've already talked about this album in another thread, but I guess I should reiterate: A truely embarassing, jokey album featuring nothing but half-written songs. I mean, seriously! It's not even musical! There are no hooks! What the fuck's the point? There's just not a single interesting thing about the album... well, the swirling fuzz-pop first song is ALMOST interesting in a bizarre way... and "It's the Love" is a pretty good cutesy rocker with a hilariously bad guitar solo (which had to be intentional), but everything else? Man... remember how good "pod" was? That's how I want to remember the Breeders. For the record, I think "Last Splash" is boring and crappy, I think "Title TK" is interesting from an atmospheric standpoint but only a few of the songs really do anything with it (like the excellent "Off You"). I think "Pod" is EXTREMELY overrated but it's got some real gems on it like "Glorious". This album is awful and forgettable and no one will care in.. actually, no one cares now. See, I'm not trying to be condescending; people like what they like, whatever, but it just AMAZES me that there are so many people who still like stuff that isn't musical in any way. I mean, there's just nothing of any musical value on here. I dunno. I just don't get it. |

Do you guys generally read manuals on how to write about bands and then transcribe them on the internet?
I haven't heard it yet. |

its awful, boring. about 2 decent tracks on it. i wasnt a fan of title tk at all and the last splassh is a classic indie album but mountain battles is an appaling dissappointment especially when its an albini engineered one too.......

ha ha "not that bad!" Let's hear it for mediocrity!
The only good Breeders I've heard is Pod. Last Splash wasn't even close to how good Pod was. And even Pod isn't like heartbreakingly great or anything.

albini has recorded plenty of bad records. it seems like sometime he differentiates between recording music he likes and recording music that pays the bills.

I love Pod and Last Splash but Mountain Battles is pretty crappy. I saw them last month and they put on a good show though.

I've said this to a few people: it's much better than anything that the reformed Pixies would have put out.

how the fuck can you assume that? they havnt recorded anything. now to mention the breeders arent reformed, they never broke up. we all thought dino jr's beyond was gonna blow, and it was pretty rockin. mission of burma's onoffon and olitarati (sp?) were both fucking amazing, for all we know, a new pixies record coulda been great, or horrible. point is, we cant assume anything. p.s., pod is my favorite record out of both the pixies and the breeders, and i love the pixies.

Actually they did record one song and... Mountain Battles>Bam Thwok I can say that I'm a bigger Pixies fan than Breeders fan, but, save a few songs, Trompe Le Monde isn't that great or anything. I'm just going on the basis that most likely the driving force behind the new record would be Black Francis and it'd just end up Kim being suppressed, like always.

comparing pixies to breeders is a folly because they are 2 different bands. its like comparing eyes adrift to nirvana, like comparing shellac to big black, its like comparing chalk with cheese, and its an unfair comparison.
pixies will never record another surfer rosa, like the dinosaurs will never record another living, sy will never record another daydream so why are we arguing the toss over a much lauded over 2nd rate spin off band. the breeders were always "alright", no more no less, pod was a damn fine record, cannonball was a damn fine party pop indie chart hit but lets be honest... are we ex pixie member fans or are we pissing against the wind???? |

The Breeders are not, by any stretch of the imagination, better than the Pixies. Hell, a lot of Frank Black's solo stuff is better than the Breeders! Though completely boring and there's too much of it, there are some classic albums ("Teenager of the Year" for example) that stomp all over anything the Breeders, the Martinis, or whatever other bullshit ... To me, it's all pretty boring now, because I already went through that phase of wearing all this stuff out years ago. All I know is today, Mountain Battles doesn't sound the least bit pleasing to my ear. "Pod" still does, but even it gets a little too much praise in most circles.
Bam Thwok isn't a very good song, but it's better than this album. And if the Pixies did do another album (which they probably won't), it'd probably be great, since Frank would be writing all the songs. See, the thing is, even the stuff on his solo releases that I don't like (the boring country shit he does.. actually, anything he's released past a certain point in his career), you can still tell he's a good songwriter -- all he needs is Joey Santiago over top and it's going to be more interesting. And before anyone says "BUT JOEY DID PLAY IN FRANK'S SOLO STUFF!", Frank's band had as many as 4 (!) guitar players at one point, so it's not like Santiago's contributions really meant anything. But yeah, I think a new Pixies record would be pointless. They made a bunch of really great albums (and the decent "Bossanova") -- they have nothing to prove. But who knows. |

I downloaded Moutain Battles and then deleted it a day or two latter. There's my review.
