HEALTH are an American, noise rock band from Los Angeles, California. The band's recent release with Crystal Castles, charted at position 9 in the UK indie singles chart.
The band have found fame by playing multiple concerts for free, leading a variety of venues requesting to book them. The band's favourite setting, The Smell, has been their chosen place to record their full length album, "during empty mornings" , although the band have already recorded a live album at the Smell, released on DNT Records. HEALTH have been described as having "artfully crafted noise and raw synth, haunting monotone vocals, and drum skills that are borderline insane". Guardian Unlimited writer, Louis Pattison, chose the Crystal Castles version of "Crimewave" as the pick of the week, describing the song as "melancholy electro-pop built from pixelated synths and depressed vocals that hint at a past programme of busy and sustained serotonin depletion". Jim Carroll of The Irish Times also chose the song as tune of the week. The band describes the role of lyrics as being "purposely kept vague for the listener": "...[Lyrics] sort of begin to bring out this more individual quality to the whole thing like, `These are the lyrics, and this is the guy is singing them, so I can relate to that.' Which is really not something we want. We wanted the vocals to have an even, unaffected feel. A softness, like a Zombies melody, or even a Gregorian chant. We aren't just interested in being a noisy screaming band."The band's unusual sound can be partially accredited to the use of the Zoothorn, which is a permutation of microphone and guitar pedal and an occasional atonal sound without a symmetrical structure. band members are: Benjamin Jared Miller Jake Duzsik John Famiglietti Jupiter Keyes THE OFFICIAL MYSPACE PAGE HEALTH.... I like the parts where the drums sound almost kodo-like.
some tracks are a bit too long, but all in all it's a positive/interesting listening. Curious about live renditions.

Yes, it's a nice listen, a bit of a grower, but still raw and noisy.
I like the drumming too. Thanks Pauly!

I just searched to see if there were any threads about this band.
They're absolutely amazing, one of the best bands I've came across on myspace. Tried to order their album on amazon but they were all out. I've got the T-shirt though!

has anyone here seen a show at the Smell? this is a pretty good lil "scene" they got goin there, i hate la but i might make the drive to check this out is someone can verify its a cool place to go. I quite like No Age, certainly much more than all the other newer bands that Pitchfork blew their load over in 07. They got like a Crass meets MBV thing with some noiseish stuff. Anyways, The Smell; is it worth making an 8 hr drive from tucson to check out?

I've never been to the Smell since I live on the opposite corner of the continent, but it sure seems like they have a choice selection of performers.
If you have Last.FM... you can look up the tag 'the smell' for some music... Oh, and thanks for the upload. I have the album on tape, but I don't want to be listening to my walkman all day :P |

Yeah, thanks for bumping it, I was about to myself, no reason to have 3 threads on this band. Jesus. At least this thread seems relevant compared to the first one, as described in your first post on here (because if I remember correctly, there was a thread called health - HEALTH that just degenerated into ridiculous shit).
Anyway, this band is still... pretty mediocre.. They're listenable, at least... somewhat enjoyable... etc. The hype will sweep them away, and I don't think they're doing a single thing that's original or anything, but oh well. People dig it, so neat. I have to agree with a post above that said the drumming is cool. The drum sound they captured is awesome, indeed, probably the best thing about this disc. I don't think any of the songs really stand out but none of 'em are... okay, there are a few throwaway tracks... but none of 'em are AWFUL. It's all around just a pretty good little disc, nothing to get too excited over. I saw the Crystal Castles mentioned on the other thread. THAT BAND IS AWFUL. That is all. |

To batreleaser: I go to the Smell frequently and it's a really great place to see a show if you want to feel the dingy, DIY, arty, dirty, punk, youthful, intimate thing. Personally, I love that thing. But I don't know if I would make an 8-hour drive to it unless the band that I wanted to see wasn't playing anywhere nearer to where I was. OK, maybe I would cuz it would be an adventure at least.
Dan Deacon's playing there tomorrow but it's supposed to be a secret. I saw him perform there a couple weeks ago and it was a secret performance as well. Very fun. People are very nice. Homeless "security guard" Daniel always giving me a hi. Just do it but make sure the band is worth it. Also, I've lived in LA all my life and I used to not like it so much. All I saw was scenesters and Hollywood bullshit but I was just ignorant and very impressionable (probably still am). I believed what everyone else, who most of the time weren't from here, had to say about it. Then, I started actually exploring. I found the Smell and other cool stuff and remembered my own personal roots that never had anything to do with Hollywood and scenesters and I love it here now. Plus, we have the best tacos. Why do people hate LA so much? Here's the Smell's schedule - http://www.thesmell.org/schedule.html, just because I felt like making it convenient for ya. |

i luv health. i wouldn't say they're the most original thing, but neither is NO AGE and i love them to death as well. even early sy were influenced by the fall and teenage jesus. MIKA MIKO are the farthest thing from original, but they have an energy live about them.
btw, the HEALTH cd was recorded at the smell. i think HEALTH will be the next big thing after NO AGE. |
