i think there's a lot of people like myself who are only really familiar with the self titled to rather ripped side of sonic youth - and feel confused when it comes to all the side projects/collaborations/15,923rd thurston solo noise jam he recorded in his sleep last wednesday.
so what stuff do you think is worth investigating for those of us who like the poppier side but arent averse to giving the more freeform noise whatever stuff a go? |

Hmmm, perhaps some of their soundtrack stuff (Made In USA, Demonlover), its still noisy experimental loveliness but shorter, more varied tracks. I think alot of people who aren't used to it get bored/overwhelmed/threatened by a track thats over 8 minutes in length, so perhaps they should steer away from SYR initially. Certainly if I'd heard SYRs when i first heard Goo and Dirty i would have been so like totes wtf?, foresooth?

The best thing to do with a band like SY is to pick randomly. Taste varies way too much. Not everything they put out is good, but it's all good to someone. Just be spontaneous about it.

Also, the Bark Haze CD on Important would be good for testing the waters of improv/sonik skronk
