Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore has no problem with the band’s controversial decision to release an album exclusively through Starbucks Music, according to an interview published in the July issue of Relix. “It turned out to be a joke because we got all this press about how Sonic Youth was doing this CD for Starbucks and how could they work with that corporation,” Moore recent told Relix. “I felt that they were no better or worse than working with a corporation like Universal.” The Starbucks exclusive, Hits Are For Squares, displays a selection of Sonic Youth favorites by artists including Radiohead, The Flaming Lips, Flea and comedian David Cross. Now that Starbucks has discontinued its venture into music distribution, the album has ironically become a rare collector’s item. The feature also discusses Sonic Youth’s latest work The Eternal, an album that was recorded for Matador Records with “a no second thoughts approach” that bassist Lee Ronaldo believes “hearkens back to the origins of rock and roll.” Be sure to read our recent Sonic Youth feature, “Pleased to Meet You,” in Relix for more on Sonic Youth’s new album and other recent projects.
